Bad performance again

Tonight it's really bad again.
For hours I was hardly able to get postings through.
The old "wpa-pl-wpaframework-10000" features seems to have been switched on again :-( :-( :-(

Re: Bad performance again

Hi Rainald,

Apologies for the bad performance. We are currently re-indexing the entire ITRC & BSC Forums to fix the issues with the search engine. This has led to some performance issues over the weekend, will keep you posted on our progress,

Cheers,

Gary

Re: Bad performance again

Thanks for the reply, Gary.
I was really terrible last night - I could not even reach your replies in the 3 new threads I had opened .

If such a big overhaul is done, wouldn't a *warning* announcement be of help?
IMO this would avoid lot of frustration.

Re: Bad performance again

I agree with Rainald. It would be nice to know if maintenance is being performed on the forum that could affect performance. Yesterday was awful.

Re: Bad performance again

Gary,
me again.
I'm seriously angry (again, but rrrrreaallllly angry this time).
Pls forgive me.
I *KNOW* that it's not your fault and that you are doing your best.

But I'm simply fed up.
Please forward to the powers in charge that this "shaded sun" is simply fed up.
Yes, fed up.
I simply can not work this way.
And Yes - pls forward this in the best way you can - I am doing *WORK* in the forum, not just playing ...

And I simply can hardly bear it anymore.

Right now one of my - pretty well known most lenghthy - postings got swallowed.
I had been working on it for more than half an hour (to be very modest ) with checking the sources, going through the manuals, collecting the references etc., etc.
It was not just some 2-liner but a long and really well thought out posting based on most intensive work.
Went to Nirvana with the famous
"wpa-pl-wpaframework-10000"
good-bye greeting.

Mr. Hewlett & Mrs. Packard,
PLEASE get the forum software fixed.
I simply can not bear it anymore !!!!

Yours sincerely

Prof. Dr. Rainald Taesler

Re: Bad performance again

Hey Rainald

Just a thought. Knowing what can happen to big replys here, like you just mentioned above,...I save to notepad or word doc, as I go, this way your covered, just in case. It's no fix I know, but atleast you won't end up, starting over !

Re: Bad performance again

John,
YES, save to Notepad is what I do too - normally.
Buit it happens only too often that I just forget it :-( :-(

And folks of my profession are called "absent-minded"

Re: Bad performance again

Gary,
again it's terrible as terrible can be.
I truied and tried and tried it yestaerday.
Mostly not even the forum homepage was reachable.
And if could manage to get through at all, reples did not get throuh. So it wa a handful of things I could get done.

Even worse today.
Tried it over hours. 3 or 4 cases here it work. The best thing ever seen was the main page of the "notebooks - n-series" forum listing threads with the newst being from April 2005.

At least 3 dozens of times I tried thsi palce.

And I'm pretty sure that I am not alone.
Just *one* single notification since yesterday.
And hardly any postings from others.

You may be fed up with my lamenting.
And I understand that major overhauling work is done.

Still:
a) Has indexing really be done in a place being online?
Could the data be worked on backstage?

b) If the situation is like it is in the moment, wouldn't it be far better to judt *CLOSE* forum area for a day or two or there, do the work and then re-open the forums?

IMHO there would be ways less frustration would the system just dispaly a page saying "Sorry, closed due to major road works. The forums will available again on Monday 27" ????

Re: Bad performance again

I agree with Rainald. This indexing process has been going on for some time now and making it very difficult to get through. Many times when I get through, all I see is a bunch of meaningless threads - rubbish really.

So what is the use of keeping the forums running while this process is going on? I can't imagine this is very productive for HP either.

If this type of work is being done, why not post a message that the forums will be down for some period of time or, at the very least, a message that maintenance will be performed on the forums during a defined period of time and let your users decide if they want to waste their time trying to work on a forum under those conditions.

Personally, this "random" (at least from my perspective) performance degradation is very tiresome, baffling and discouraging. I am tempted to refocus my time in more productive pursuits and just check in every week or so to see if things have improved.

As a follow up:
It was hell again today.
It's better right now but the system was not usable for hours.

Re: Bad performance again

Early Sunday morning, it's still bad. This is the Worst, I've (ever) seen this problem, I can only assume, that the repair team, has run in to bigger problems, requiring an extended repair window ??

Whats the latest you've heard Gary ?

Re: Bad performance again

John, Eino,
when I got my last posting through it was just a lucky moment in may hours of failure.

What I really don't understand is why they do not just shut down the place (as suggested and supported by Prof. Julie).

A system almost totally unsable still promise to to be up and running IMHO causes the worst damage for HP's name and reputation possible.

Easy to imaging how frustrated help-seeking users will be byx the present state; the 3 or 4 notifications and the handful of item in the list of new threads speak a clear language ...

Re: Bad performance again

Hi All,

Apologies for the performance issues associated with the reindexing, it is due to be completed by midnight EST tonight, 5am GMT (Forums Time).

It was hoped that the reindexing of the production databases while being carried out at low traffic times would have a minimal impact on everyone, apologies once again.

Re: Bad performance again

Gary, the forums seem to be more responsive now, in general, but there's still some small hiccups from time to time, but overall better, at least on my end.

Re: Bad performance again

Hi All

The forum works quite well here too, but there are not many new threads.
