Forums Improvement Thread

Hi,

This thread is to be used as a place holder for people to log suggestions for improvements and new feature requests for the ITRC Forums.

In the past these requests have typically been logged in the monthly Performance threads meaning that they tend to get lost quite quickly.

Performance related issues should continue to be logged in the montly thread here:

http://forums.itrc.hp.com/service/forums/questionanswer.do?threadId=1227697

Please note, I don't work for HP and have no control over whether any suggestions logged here will get implemented - hopefully they will, but don't blame me if they don't !

Cheers,

Rob

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

Aha! nice idea but what if HP doesn't implement that?
Anyways i think they should make their search and advance search better.
I searched even i question which i m sure that they were there but search could not find them.
So i was just wondering that before posting a question if someone wanna search here he cant do it precisely.

Thanks, Ajay

Until then you can always use google and restrict the search with:
site:itrc.hp.com search query ...

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

Well, this is proposing kind of a revolution, but I have long been, well, not completely satisfied with the graduation scales.
1. 250 points
2. 2 * 1.
3. 2 * 2.
4. 2.5 * 3. ??
5. 3 * 4. !!
6. 3.33 * 5. !!!!
and from there on, 2 * previous.

4. , 5. , and 6 definitely look UGLY!!
And 250 looks "just a number".

We (at least, most) techies in IT.
We are ingrained with binary.

Would not 256 be a much more appropriate starting point?
And then a new rank for each doubling?

That would lead to :

256. Pro
512. Graduate
1024. Wizard
2048. Royalty
4096. New rank. Maybe Emperor?
8192. Pharaoh
16384 Olympian
32768 Star
Each doubling - one more star.

Of course, some transitopn mechanism has to be devised & implemented, but that can be done.

What is the general feeling on this?

fwiw.

Proost.

Have one on me.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

Google doesn't hold all threads. Don't know why but sometimes I have to use the VERY SLOW HP search to get a complete answer.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

An option to disable ALL notifications would be nice. Now I have to disable each question.

Also clear notification in the forum profile "list of all notification of the past" would be nice. To keep the HP db cleaner (and faster).

And may be outsource the forum to google.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

Thanks Wim,

I was also going to suggest "disable all notifications" but you've done it for me.

I guess an "Only notify if thread is less than X days old" might be useful. I'm not usually that interested in receiving notifications on 2-3 year old threads that someone's decided to drag up.

Rob

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

Whatever happened to my arithmetic?

>>>
6. 3.33 * 5. !!!!
<<<

Pharaoh to Olympian is * 2.67 , of course. :-(

But that does not really change the idea.

Why not use octal numering ? Everyone gets a higher score for free (except those under 8).

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

The question is, do you actually do anything with them other than log them?

I don't think I've ever seen any real comments from HP or heard that any of the suggestions have ever been implemented.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

Must agree with that. All bugs are still their.

Another thing I'm missing is that the site should keep a cookie identifying the time the screen was last used (or used for the specified selection criteria). Then it should divide the messages in 2 groups : those that changed since the last usage and those that didn't. This way you can directly see what changed.

Now I have to do it manually. And the mail overhead is just too much so I disabled that.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

One that I logged a long time ago, which I think would be very useful, is the ability to post text in a monospace font.

All too often the Retain format(spacing) option doesn't cut it when typing in commands, or pasting the output from commands with lots of spaces etc.

Something like phpBB's [code] tags would be useful.

Cheers,

Rob

Cross-posting! As someone who occasionally talks about a tool that relates to patching, security, and HP-UX administration I would love the ability to crosspost!

>Bob: Cross-posting!

Copy posting will get your thread deleted.
I suppose cross posting wouldn't have the disjoint duplicates with no connections.

A poor man's cross posting would be to have the moderators move the thread from forum to forum until they are all covered. While only one forum would see the counts, it would be visible in all.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

When I tried to post pointers to a thread in other forums the pointers were closed. An ability that Usenet had in the early 80's... for a good reason.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

Hi,

Another one, which I'm sure someone's mentioned before, is that when you change the View to show "Questions with no replies" it shouldn't show "question moved" threads.

Cheers,

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

If forum members have a certain amount of unassigned points they should be unable to post till they have went through their old questions and tidied things up.

This issue seems to have got a lot worse over the last 2 years.

I know it should be about learning and being able to help other members, but the points are a way of saying thankyou for people that have responded to your questions.
If a you dont think a reply was relevent then you can assign 0 points.

There are just too many people taking replies for granted.

I'm not the most technical person so i really value the replies i've got to my questions over the years, i just wish some other members felt the same way.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

That last suggestion would be a pain in the a-- to code.

Good idea overall.

Suggestion: Give me a hat to shoot for.

Note: I am aware of the existance of this thread.

Re: Forums Improvement Thread

May be more people would assign points when they are visibly marked as "bad". E.g. next to their name show a black point with a slash over it. Or a "bad" smiley. Or a red point.

E.g. when less than 90% of the answers they received didn't receive points and number of answers > 10.
