Best ways to search HP DOCS.

When I try to find out the docs in knowledgebase, very few times I get what I want.
I noticed that few members on ITRC are very good at it. I need to mention "SANJAY". Looks like he has all the HP Docs with him.

I welcome - all tips, suggestion, information that would help me to search the HP Docs effectively and efficiently.

By putting the question in sysadmin category, I expect to gew more hits.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

I'm with you, Anil. I have a hard time finding anything. Another one that's good at it is Robert-Jan Goossens. I'd be very interested to hear what their secrets are.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

I was going to suggest an advance google search on docs.hp.com, but it appears that HP has disabled bots on the english lanaguage pages. However, all the other language version appear to be searchable by this means, if that helps any.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Hi Guys,

There is no secret. Just keep the number of keywords to a minimum and then increase them one at a time.

I posted a link for a sendmail question a few minutes back and the keywords that i used to get the doc was sendmail and uppercase.

I'm basically a google man. Couldn't find any doc that i print and keep for future references. So have to rely on search engines.

Thanks & Regards
Sanjay

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Hey! That mail question was mine. And thanks Anil for posting this question. I've often wondered the same thing myself. Reading Sanjay's answer, I guess it just boils down to judicious selection of the search terms.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Best way to tame the Knowledge Base is to use quotes or Boolean searches.

Best way to tame docs.hp.com is to use + signs.

Throw me some examples that you're having trouble with and I'll give you specifics.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

For Cheryl,

The other day I was trying "cmgetconf gets logged several times in syslog" I tried several combinations, but could not get anything. I knew it is there, as I had read it previously.

The great SANJAY could get it.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Rac,

Search on -->cmgetconf "syslog.log"

I try and use quoted strings first and refer to keywords if need be.

I beat Cheryl :)

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Boolean, all words works for me on itrc.

I like Boolean because it seems to proiritize the words in the order I put them in the search field.

The problem with exact phrase is its too literal. Sometimes I think its case sensitive but its not.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Doh! That Eric Schmidt beat me to the punch line. I will forgive him this time. :0)

No boolean required:
cmgetconf "syslog.log" (All words)

I wonder if this is a problem with how your handle is tied to your ITRC login. I tried it with several logins (exact same search). The doc appeared under some logins and not under others. The difference in logins is access level.

The Knowledge Base is case sensitive so do not mix case. Leave your search to all lower case, unless you're using quotes.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Cheryl,

No luck. I do (all words search) for cmgetconf "syslog.log"

All I get is five patch links. Under document types, I select everything.

Also, it should not be related to "how login handl is set"

You probably don't have a system handle linked to your account with software support. Go to 'my profile' and 'view support agreements'. See if the handles listed have software support. The column should say 'yes' underneath at least one of the handles. Without this, you don't have access to tech. docs....only HP.com docs and patch info. If all else fails, open a call with the response center have them investigate for you.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

RAC,

Correction.

Under 'view support agreements', there's a Column for 'Technical Knowledge Base'. Make sure at least one system handle has a 'yes' under that column.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

Hi Rac,

There is no magical answer, I just use a minimal number of keywords, quotes when you have a dot or a special character and the "all words" option.

You should have no problems, if your system handle has been linked to your id. Check if you can open the link below.

Re: Best ways to search HP DOCS.

If the handle is not linked properly, then you will be entitled to see the documents related to patches only.

It has everything to do with how the handle and login are tied together.

I do not have any system handle that I can link with ITRC. Thanks.
