Upgrading HP Z420, Intel® Xeon E5-1650, 8GB

Hello!

I am consider buying this workstation and wanted to ask if I wanted to add more ram to this workstation which RAM brand would fit into this design (e.g. Kingston ECC UNBUF)? Do you think any unbffered ECC memory can fit in with the original dimms already installed?

Thanks!

Re: Upgrading HP Z420, Intel® Xeon E5-1650, 8GB

Here is al ist of the memory that HP recommends being installed in the Z420 unit:

DDR3-1600 ECC Unbuffered DIMMs
8GB DDR3-1600 ECC Unbuffered RAM
4GB DDR3-1600 ECC Unbuffered RAM
2GB DDR3-1600 ECC Unbuffered RAM

DIMMs should be distributed across all four memory channels for optimal performance.
Each processor supports up to 4 channels of DDR3 memory. To realize full performance at least 1 DIMM must be inserted into each channel.

The CPUs determine the speed at which the memory is clocked. If a 1066MHz capable CPU is used in the system, the maximum speed the memory will run at is 1066MHz regardless of the specified speed of the memory.

DDR3-1600 ECC Unbuffered DIMMs -                                  AMO
HP 8GB (1x8GB) DDR3-1600 ECC RAM                         A2Z50AA
HP 4GB (1x4GB) DDR3-1600 ECC RAM                         A2Z48AA
HP 2GB (1x2GB) DDR3-1600 ECC RAM                         A2Z47AA

NOTE: Only unbuffered DDR3 DIMMs are supported.

Re: Upgrading HP Z420, Intel® Xeon E5-1650, 8GB

3rd party memory modules may work. I understood that a lot of people want to use them due to the price difference. We have seen so many problems with 3rd party memory modules. Using them may cause void of warranty. I saw certain modules casues damaging of memory slots, performance problem, .., and so on. If the cost difference is HP module is not too much, I'm recommending to use HP memory to get 100% support from HP including warranty, not spend your time to find out the compatible ones, and not have any concern.

I think you can buy them in Ukraine. Please call "Сервіс та підтримка +380 44 496 9669 |+7 (495) 797-3520 | 8-800-700-3520". They can tell where you can buy them.

Re: Upgrading HP Z420, Intel® Xeon E5-1650, 8GB

Do you know the difference between the $120 MFG #A2Z48AA 4GB Dimms and The smart buy $100 MFG #A2Z48AT 4GB? The specs look the same, but there must be a difference in quality, speed, Or ?, etc. I would think.

The two product are exaclty the same. The reaons they have different part #, is that the xxAT sku are pre-discounted for small quantities, the other XXAA skus are for large quantity orders.

You can go ahead and buy the cheaper AT sku and you'll be just fine.
