HP Z620 Xeon E5 V2 CPU Upgrade fail, Recall or Lawsuit Remedy?

[ Edited ]

I upgraded the firmware prior to installing the new CPU...   any ideas?

new Cpu is Xeon E5 1620 V2

Simply get fans spinning and nothing onscreen at all, as a couple of otherbpeople haveposted in other forums.

Is there an undocumented procedure, or is a Recall or Lawsuit in order?

Here is the recent thread discussing the issue:

h30499.www3.hp.com/t5/Workstations-z-series-xw-series/z820-e5-2600-v2-ivy-bridge-upgrade/td-p/622711...

Bottom line: the system may not be compatible with the v2 CPUs.

Thanks for the tip, but unfortunately there is no posted solution in that thread for the Z620.

Anybody else have success upgrading their Z620 Cpu to V2 and steps followed?

If there is no update path, it's simply false advertising, especially when HP releases a Bios that clearly states it is compatible with updated intel processors...

Being that HP  advertised the upgradeability thru public statements, will these workstations be recalled for a fix?

Is it Intel or HP's responsibility to issue recalls or refunds?  Who should we pursue for financial remedy?

HP does not support Ivy-Bridge processor (v2) on sandy-bridge system board officially. If you puchased Ivy-bridge processor, the system boards will support both ivy- and sandy-bridge processors.

Re: HP Z620 Xeon E5 V2 CPU Upgrade fail, Recall or Lawsuit Remedy?

Has anyone been able to upgrade their older z820 or Z620 to use e5-2600 v2 processors yet?  Any tips?

UPDATE:  I updated the BIOS to J61 v0 3.65 but I do note that the Boot Block Date even after the latest BIOS firmware refresh still sits at 12/28/2011.

The workstation still doesn't POST with a brand retail box Xeon E5 2600 series V2, one of two on hand so i know it's not the CPU.  The system on power up just sits there with the fans running with solid blue light, then the fans kick up to full speed and it does nothing.

Is HP ultimately locking out customers from updating by not updating the Boot Block Date to accept these new V2 processors even though the Intel C602 chipset onboard fully supports these processors?

Re: HP Z620 Xeon E5 V2 CPU Upgrade fail, Recall or Lawsuit Remedy?

I am dealing with the same issue here.  Z620 workstation will power on but not POST (no video) with an E5-2609v2 proc installed.

That being said, HP Proliant servers have the same issue when upgrading from a non-v2 to a v2 proc.  HP released a fix for THIS issue, and it works perfectly:

Anyone from HP reading this who can say if there is a similar fix for workstations like the Z620, or before I go do something unwise, that can confirm if this Proliant fix can be applied to the Z620?

Thanks in advance...

Re: HP Z620 Xeon E5 V2 CPU Upgrade fail, Recall or Lawsuit Remedy?

Chris, the Proliant BIOS is different than the Z620 BIOS.  There is no similar BIOS upgrade process for Workstations.  Do not try to apply the Proliant fix on the Z620.
