Reset HP Compaq T5530/T5135

Anyone know how I can reset the thin client T5530/T5135. Documentation on this device isn't very helpful, and doing research on the net and hp website doesn't have anything on resettting the device.

Basically if I was to configure one for a new user, how would I go about resetting the device and reconfiguring it from scratch.

For the t5530 there are four ways to reset the unit to factory defaults (ordered in increasing difficulty):

1) Click on the button in the Control Panel->System labelled Reset
2) Push & Hold the F9 key during power-up (this is assuming the F9 key was not disabled by the system admin)
3) Install the latest firmware image from HP's support website to a USB disk on key and plug into the t5530 and power-cycle. (this is assuming the USB boot was not disabled in BIOS)
4) Contact HP support to repair unit

The terminal does not have Control Panel, but Settings. Going into Settings, there's no section where it allows me to reset. I am logged in as administrator into the terminal. At the Sytem tab, I can name the terminal etc, but no labelled that says reset to factory default. I have use the WYSE before and know that you can do it that way, but the HP T5135 does not have that option.

Pressing the F9 key does nothing.

Use the image utility to create a bootable USB key that will re-image the t5135 back to factory specs.

Is this the only way to reset the device? Isn't there an easier way to go about resetting the device to factory default than having to reload the OS image?

It takes about 2 minutes to reload the OS. I don't think it's that difficult. Compared to the option of using Altaris to deploy the image, it's quite easy.

I'm sure that 2 minute to reload the image isn't so bad. Reason why I ask if there's a way to do it within the terminal is that we have 8 IT technician. And each time we want to set it to factory default, we'll need to go looking for the USB key where the image is located. That's why i thought there's got to be an easier way to reset the unit within the hardware without having to involve a third piece to reset it.

If you hit ctrl-alt-backspace, once the thin client starts to reboot then hold down the F9 key and it will set the thin client back to defaults. I just tested it on a T5135.

This is insane. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace when and what should I expect to see? When do I hit F9? I've tried from the time just before I power on, a second later, after I see the prompt appear and after I see the HP TC begin to load without success. Why isn't this documented somewhere? I've seen better documentation on freeware than on the T5135. Can someone from HP please address this?

I found that you have to wait untill after the first graphic. The screen will actually flicker. At that point you press F9 and it will reset. It is the same point where you hit the LEFT Shift if you want to force a login.

You need to create the Flash image on a USB flash drive first.

Next, ensure the BIOS is set to boot from USB:
Power on the device and Press F10
Select Advanced BIOS features
First Boot Device .
Select USB .
Set the Second Boot Device to ATA Flash.
Press F10 to Save and Exit
Place USB Key with the HP T5135 Reimage Flash onto a USB Port on the Thin Client.
You will receive a Warning that this will Format the Flash drive and Erase all data.
Select Y to confirm
Select Y to Run this Utility.
The drive will begin to Format and will show itâ s progression.
Once complete, a message will flash on the display advising you to remove the USB key and Power Cylcle the Thin Client.

You CANNOT reset an HP TC 5125/5135 with the F9 key. Don't bother trying. Reflash the unit.


Too bad HP doesn't provide documentation for these things...

Yes you can reset a HP t5135. I just did it with the F9 key, I held it down the whole time the TC was booting and it got reset.
