Old zx2000 firmware and CPUs

[ Edited ]

Hello,

could anyone please let me know is there any kind of incompatibility of McKinley firmware (PAL/SAL/EFI) and Madison/Deerfield CPUs? Given a 2002 year motherboard (cannot recall the exact version of the firmware, likely bmc is 1.40) and 3 CPUs 1.0GHz (supported on zx2000), 1.4GHz (not supported but reported to work fine) and 1.5GHz (not supported but supposed to work). The CPUs are known to work on another (2004 year) board. MB (of the subject) is reported by seller to work with 900MHz McKinley. The system fails with Firmware Error  when booted, all 3 CPUs were tested with the same result. Quering the console port reveals that power, and fans are OK but "Firmware is hung".

The question is - what's more likely to explain this behaviour: MB damage or inconsistent firmware?

Thank you in advance.

Unfortunately, a McKinley chip causes the same error :(
