Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Hi,

I downgraded the memory in my C3600 to 1GB and made a fresh installation of HP-UX.

But I cannot boot due to the following error

---------------------------
WARNING: Not enough memory to boot to OS.

CPU 0
WARNING: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem). Refer to
the "ME" command in the INFORMATION menu and the "PDT"
command in the SERVICE menu for error information.
---------------------------

This is the output of the "ME" command in the INFORMATION menu:

---------------------------
MEMORY INFORMATION

MEMORY STATUS TABLE

Slot Size Status
---- ------ -------------
0 512MB Active
1 512MB Active

TOTAL MEMORY = 1024MB

MEMORY FAULT TABLE

Slot Size Status
---- ------ -------------

Memory Installation Guidelines

- For best performance, load DIMMs in ascending slot order: 0, 1, 2, ...

Active, Installed Memory : 1024MB of SDRAM
Deallocated Pages : 0 Pages
-----------
Available Memory : 1024MB

Good Memory Required by OS : 2032MB

Memory
HVERSION SVERSION
-------- ----------
0x09c0 0x0900
------------------------------

And this is the output of the "PDT" command in the SERVICE menu:

------------------------------
PAGE DEALLOCATION TABLE INFORMATION

Address Error Type Perm Slot
------------ ---------- ---- ----

No entries in Page Deallocation Table

PDT has 50 free entries
PDT Reset Clear Flag is Set
PDT Interleaving Changed Flag is Clear
------------------------------

How can I get rid of that and fix this problem?

I can't believe that the machine insists on 2GB RAM forever, if it has been equipped with it for once.

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

hi,

the first thing to do would be to reset PDC to its defaults.

do this by going into the configuration menu and issuing the DE command

you may have to change the paths back to how you want them afterwards but this should clear your warning.

Also which version of HPUX are you trying to install? is it 11i v2 by any chance?

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Hi Andy,

thanks a lot, I'll sort that out.

I'm trying to install 11.11 TCOE, but 11.23 also works fine. There are a few threads about it. :-)

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Hi,

I tried what you suggested and it works, but only once.
This means that each time I boot the machine, it stops in PDC, I enter "DE" and then I can boot the OS.

Is there any further explanation for this error?

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

hi,

running out of ideas for you on this one!

what is the firmware of the workstation? you could always update it/overwrite it, and see if this fixes it
the latest is 5.0 and can be found here

ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/firmware_patches/hp/cpu/PF_CBCJ0050
ftp://ftp.itrc.hp.com/firmware_patches/hp/cpu/PF_CBCJ0050.txt

Also after you issued the DE command did you change the boot options?
example change the auto boot on and auto search on again. issuing the DE command Im sure turns these features off.

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Thanks again, firmware is already the latest 5.0.
After issuing "DE" I do nothing else.

Yesterday I tried to boot directly without issuing "DE" - and it works.

So my current procedure is as follows:

- Turn the machine on
- booting stops at PDC with "GoodMem" warning
- I enter "BO PRI"
- System boots

Then I turned AUTO BOOT on, just to see what happens. But it is immediately disabled after reboot due to the "GoodMem" warning.

If I insert an additional 1GB of memory (what I don't want), the message is gone and AutoBoot works.

Now I removed the clock chip for today and insert it again when I return.

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Update:

Just inserted the NVRAM again, but the problem persists.

Now I could check the clock timer of a different machine, maybe the error is inside the NVRAM.

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

hi,

It could be the real time clock, i've replaced these on few other machines in the past but not for this problem.

I would try and re do the firmware again, even if its the same version. This has cured a few problems for me in the past.

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Update:

The other NVRAM module does also not work.

What I tried:

- a new hard disk
- a fresh installation of HP-UX
- another NVRAM module
- setting PDC to defaults

Where is this damn setting saved and how can I reset it?

Upcoming next:
re-flashing the latest firmware as suggested

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Hi,

I found a document where it says that there is a PDC call which allows to set good memory:

The "Set Good Memory" option sets the value of the good_mem parameter returned by the
"Return Information" option.

http://ftp.parisc-linux.org/docs/arch/pdc20-v1.0-Ch4-procs.pdf (page 46)

Where are the experts who know how to use it?

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

hi,

ive never seen that doc before but is interesting.

the only thing i can think of similar is the page deallocation table? have you tried clearing this.

go into the service manu at BCH and issue the pdt clear command

the system should reboot after this.

but just before you do that turn fastboot off, its probably on. that way it will force the systen to test the memory on boot up.

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

I now re-flashed the firmware, but the problem persists.

And I don't know how often I cleared the PDT before. Needless to say that this did also not help. ;-)

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

hi,

I suppose you have already cleared the pim registers aswell in the service manu?

MA>ser clearpim

maybe a case of a HP CE with the required s/w and passwords to change things

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

Yes, I already cleared the PIM serveral times with no success.

But a friend of mine found a workaround for it.

According to the "PA-RISC 2.0 Firmware Architecture Reference Specification" which contains the PDC procedures, there is a PDC call "Set Good Memory" in the chapter PDC_MEM.
Therefore I think that this parameter is set by either ISL or the OS.
In ISL of the "PA-RISC Offline Diagnostics CD" there is another option for setting FASTSIZE, maybe this has something to do with it.

He coded a modified PALO (PA-RISC Linux Boot Loader), which sets the "GoodMem" parameter to 0 (0=not set). The boot loader does not load a kernel, there fore a reboot is necessary or it will run into errors.

Re: Not enough error-free contiguous memory (GoodMem)

To get this to an end, here are the sources with precompiled binaries and built "lifimage":
http://rapidshare.com/files/115529454/palo-goodmem.tar.gz.html

The attachement only contains the PALO.

I would submit points to myself for this, if I could. ;-)

Maybe it helps some other guys to solve the same problem.

Can you repost the files to download? I'd like to fix this on my machine.

Thanks in advance!
