How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

Hi All,

We are running HP-UX 10.20 on 9000/785/J6000.

The following commands are not working to view the serial number on this server.

# getconf CS_MACHINE_SERIAL
getconf CS_MACHINE_SERIAL: Invalid argument

# getconf MACHINE_SERIAL
getconf MACHINE_SERIAL: Invalid argument

# cstm
sh: cstm: not found.

# print_manifest
sh: print_manifest: not found.

So is there any other commands are available to view the serial number?

Or how to solve above issues?

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

Hi James,

Are you sure that output of the command "uname -i" is serial number of the server? but i dont think so.

Hi Michael Steele,

I have already mentioned that all those commands recommended by you are working on that server.

Hi (again):

> Are you sure that output of the command "uname -i" is serial number of the server?

This is a unique machine identification number, so "yes" as far as you want to define "serial number".

This value is set in the hardware's read-only firmware by a tool available only to a HP engineer.

Some software will interrogate this value for licensing purposes.

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

Hi (again) Senthil:

I should add that this unique machine identification number is part of what goes into making a uniquer LVM Volume Group ID and LVM Physical Volume ID.

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

Hi James and Yashwant,

I have checked for serial number on some other HP server running HP-UX 11.00 using below commands.

1)#model
9000/800/N4000-75

2)# uname -i
1632349376

3)# print_manifest | more

-------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: You should retain this information for future reference.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Serial number: USR4214FY2
Order number: 24R280218~001~0200

In above example , the output of 2 command and 3 command differs.

1)Are you mentioning that "uname -i" is used to find the license (serial number) in HP-UX 10.20?

2)License and serial numbers are same in HP-UX 10.20?

3)License and serial numabers are differing on HP-UX 11.00?

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

Senthil,

Seems to be cstm not available on your system may be Support Tool not installed.

Btw, you got the system serial number with print_manifest command:

>>>
3)# print_manifest | more

-------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: You should retain this information for future reference.
-------------------------------------------------------------
Serial number: USR4214FY2
Order number: 24R280218~001~0200
>>>

Remember uname -i gives system identification , sometime used for licensing software product etc.

System Serial number is the number for your system that is required for HP Vendor call etc, and written on the rear side of the System Chasis.

In 10.20 you do not have much choice for seeing the System Serial number (other than print_manifest , cstm & getsn command) , in 11.23 onward you can see it also with machinfo command and from MP.

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

Hi Senthil:

Since you are running 10.20 (which went out-of-support about 10 years ago), you options are extremely limited.

Neither 'getconf()'s CS_MACHINE_SERIAL nor MACHINE_SERIAL appear until 11i releases and then only on certain hardware.

If you don't have STM (Online Diagnostics) installed, you won't have 'cstm'. It appears you lack that.

If you have Ignite installed (I hope so for many reasons!) then you should have the 'print_manifest' command. *However*, if I recall correctly, the case you show from another server simply shows information that was written into the original manifest file.

I have to ask, what problem are you attempting to solve? You are on an unsupported release and you appear not to have many tools that you should have installed, installed.

All said, use the 'uname -i' as I *originally* suggested.

Regards!

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

Shalom Sentil,

Since your system and OS are frightfully out of date, you can assume cstm is out of date as well.

Take a look around for some old support or application cd's and see if you can find another version that is more up to date.

This stuff has been known to lurk on the Internet. Google might be your friend.

They are now named the Online Diagnostic for HP-UX. I'd use that and/or cstm as my google search parameters.

Alternatively, it might be time to plan retirement for this system and a functionality move.

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

I'm pretty sure the serial is NOT stored in this system, so you cannot read it!

Hope this helps!

Torsten.

Re: How to view the serial number of the server in HP-UX 10.20

As you have discovered, the tools needed to obtain the machine's serial number (not the software ID from uname -i) are not on your machine. Someone must have decided to remove the STM utils and Ignite/UX (print_manifest) from the standard 10.20 install and since the machine is so badly out of date, you won't be able to download or even purchase replacement copies from HP. So the only choice is to go the machine with a flashlight and find the sticker with the serial number and write it down.

Also note that only fairly recent machines have a serial number that can be read by the OS. Boxes like the K-class and D-class do not have an electronic serial number so even with cstm and print_manifest, nothing will be returned.
