B180L Workstation serial access to install HPUX

Hello all.

I'm trying to install HPUX on a B180L machine. I have some experience with L3000 servers, where in order to install the OS, I just connect with the GSP via serial console, and follow the way to boot from installation media.

I would like to know if I can do the same to install the OS with the B180L workstation. This machine obviously hasn't a GSP, but could be accessed via serial port *before* HPUX is installed?

It happens that I haven't a monitor with the strange connector the B180L has.

Best regards and thank you very much in advance.

Re: B180L Workstation serial access to install HPUX

Most PA-RISC workstation direct the console output to VGA as long as a keyboard and mouse is connected. Without a keyboard the console is usually on serial. Connect a serial terminal (emulator) to the serial port (speed 9600) and power on the workstation. You will get into the BCH (boot console handler) menu, very much the same as you know it from your L3000 server.

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

It might be useful to know that the strange connector is known as EVC. Only a mechanical adapter is required to connect a VGA display to it.

Hello Matti. Do you know what is the pinout connections for an EVC - VGA connector? Can't find one near to me, so I'll made it with used cables...

Thank you a lot!

From the Wikipedia link I posted, you can find this:

http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_EVC_Connector_Pinout.html

..and that page contains a link to the VGA connector pinout too. Just find the matching signals by name.
