Multibay floppy not auto detecting until reboot

We have a number of D530 Ultraslims which all react in the same way.

Install a standard floppy drive (P/N 19308380-03 or DE612B) in the multibay slot and the Pc will not detect the floppy drive until reboot. If I install a SuperDisk floppy drive or a CD drive it is detected without a reboot.

Hi,

what windows version do you have? Do you have to eject the cdrom from the systray utility before you insert the floppy?

Sorry for the lack of info in the original post.
We are running W2k SP3.
Yes we do eject the CD from the 'unplug/eject hardware' dialog.
