Memory test failed

Upon running a "Norton Diagnostic test on my computer, I was advised that an error was detected at address 259612672. I am a novice computer user. What does that message mean and what should I do about it? I have also been having problems with "illegal operations" which causes me to lose whatever I am working on. Also a few times, I have had to shut down the computer by turning off the power when I couldn't get "control-alt-delete" to reboot.
