Explorer "hangs", but can open files via e.g. Word

Windows XP SP3 and fully updated, and regularly scanned with AVG and Spybot S&D.

If I click on a specific folder in Explorer window, Explorer "hangs" and does not show any files in that folder; forces me to Restart.

However, when starting Word, and go "Open File", I see the files in that folder and can open them.

Any tips ?

Try a system file check.
open a command prompt
Type sfc /scannow
You may be asked for your operating system disk.
