Local Area Network connection names.

Question is pertaining to the automatic naming of the network connections by windows during a fresh intsallation of w2k8r2.

I have a frequent deliver of DL servers that are prebuilt to a specific std, eg

Dl380 G7

4 x nc382i - std onboard nics.

pci slot 2 nc360t

pci slot 3 nc360t

This gives me 4+2+2=8 network ports.

How does windows determine the sequence of naming the ports ?

Re: Local Area Network connection names.

Hi,

It depends on OS HAL (Hardware Abstraction Layer) as it is responsible for discovering, enumerating and mediating access to most of the hardware on the host computer.

Also the BIOS structuring PCI priority, IRQ numbering, in simple to say it is kind of first come first serve.

Hope this gives an idea how the OS names it.

Thanks,

Jagadish
