I have an XW9300 with the following configuration:
Dual Opteron 290 CPU
16 GB (8 x 2 GB) DDR400 ECC RAM
Corsair Force 3 240 GB SSD
Nvidia Qradro FX3500
LG DVD Burner
Initially it was running Win XP Pro 32 bit, but I upgraded to Win XP Pro x64. All was well.
Decided to move to Windows 8 Pro 64 bit (and 8.1 by download). This OS will not install from Win XP Pro x64 (not supported). When I try a clean install, the computer starts to boot from the DVD, thinks for about 30 seconds, and then reboots. I have now tried three different DVDs, with the same outcome each time.
I tried everything I could think of, but finally gave up, installed 32 bit Win XP Pro, and then the upgrade to Windows 8 Pro (and online upgrade to 8.1) was successful and uneventful. Computer is running well on Windows 8.1 Pro 32 bit.
However, I want to migrate to 64 bit Windows 8.1 Pro. Has anyone got any suggestions?
Thanks & regards.

Do you have a W7 x64 installation disk you can use and then do an inplace upgrade to W8 Pro x64 from that?
If not, make your own, and skip entering the product key (unless you have one), and see if you can do an inplace upgrade to W8 x64 from W7 x64.
Use the Windows 7 USB/DVD installation tool to compile the ISO file you download from Digital River. Link below. You need a DVD or a 4 GB flash drive to use the USB method of compilation.
Link to the W7 ISO file downloads is below. SP1 Media Refresh are the latest file downloads.

Thanks for the advice.
I have tried that, had Win 7 64 bit up and running, tried to upgrade to Win 8 Pro 64 bit, but failed again.
One thing that is missed by buying the DVD is that it does not run the upgrade assistant. I pretended to look at buying online, and the upgrade assistant advised that my CPU's, Opteron 290's, were not supported by Windows 8.
Looks like I am stuck with 32 bit Windows 8.1, or go back to 64 bit Windows 7.
