my experience with updating versions is a 50% success rate.
double check Oracle's recommendation, it is probably the same.
Having your current environment to quickly fall back to is worth it weight in gold.

Oracle 11g R2 (64 bit) 188.8.131.52
HP HP-UX 11i v3 (B.11.31) Itanium and its saying below message..
[ HP HP-UX 11i v3 (B.11.31) Itanium
Mandatory Open Network Computing (ONC) plus version ONCplus B.11.31.08. ]
Database no problem ... we have oracle metalink 24 hour online support plus..

Backup or install?
You need to make sure you have backup of all of the non-OS files on your system. That could be separate for Oracle and your other files with DP.
You need to make sure you have licenses for your 11.31 versions of all the software you need.
Then you do your cold install from the media. Then restore from your backups, excluding the OS and system files.

This may not be too helpful if you are going to coldload. I.e. there are a whole bunch of files that you do NOT want to restore because they are 11.23 specific.
It may be easier to use DP to backup the directories you want to restore.
I.e. the user interface for DP may be easier than using mt(1) and pax(1) repeatably to restore files.
