Couldn't install physical volume, Too many links

11.23

I don't think these are alternate disks, I think they are all unique disks.
Why is this happening?

vgextend /dev/vgConbillTstData `cat disks`
vgextend: Couldn't install the physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t2d7".
Too many links
vgextend: Couldn't install the physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t3d0".
Too many links
vgextend: Couldn't install the physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t3d1".
Too many links
vgextend: Couldn't install the physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t3d2".
Too many links
vgextend: Couldn't install the physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t3d3".
Too many links
vgextend: Couldn't install the physical volume "/dev/dsk/c4t3d4".
Too many links
Volume Group configuration for /dev/vgConbillTstData has been saved in /etc/lvmconf/vgConbillTstData.conf
portltst:/var/tmp#:

Re: Couldn't install physical volume, Too many links

Hi:

You can't have more than eight (8) paths to a physical volume.

It would be useful to see your current '/etc/lvmtab' and the contents of the file named 'disks' [your list of devices].

Re: Couldn't install physical volume, Too many links

I don't think these are different paths to the same disk, but rather unique paths to unique disks.

Re: Couldn't install physical volume, Too many links

Hi:

> I think they are all unique disks

But we don't know. Look at the PVID values for the disk devices you are trying to add. If they are the same as any of the existing physical volume's PVID's then they are alternate links.

You can ascertain the PVID of a disk thusly:

# ./fetchlvmid
#!/usr/bin/sh
typeset RDEV=$1
KIND=$(xd -An -j 8192 -N8 -tc ${RDEV} 2> /dev/null | xargs)
if [ "${KIND}" = "L V M R E C 0 1" ]; then
INFO=$(xd -An -j8200 -N16 -tx ${RDEV})
PVID=$(echo ${INFO} | awk '{print $1 $2}')
fi
echo "${RDEV} PVID = ${PVID}"
exit 0

# ./fetchlvmid /dev/rdsk/c2t6d0
/dev/rdsk/c2t6d0 PVID = 411b9f8740815108

Do the above for all of the raw physical devices you have.

Regards!

Re: Couldn't install physical volume, Too many links

Shalom,

Based on the original error message, I believe these links are not unique and the error message is meaningful.

Need to know your I/O here.

Re: Couldn't install physical volume, Too many links

I did:

vgmodify -p 128 -l 128 -n

and then vgextend worked.
