Network liberation and SFP vendor lock in?

Hi,

recently a slogan of Network liberation movement has been loudly promoted, with one of the points stating that customers should be freed from vendor lock-in.

Does it mean that Procurve switches now accept SFPs from any manufacturer, or is this campaign just pure marketing junk?
