SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

Hi, I need help

I am trying to find docs for SE 9.5, but unsuccessfully.

I downloaded iso images for SE 9.5 and all the docs I need are there, but when I extract them from the iso, all of the pdfs are corrupted.

I checked the iso using MD5 and the image is OK.

I tried google but nothing.

Can someone help me?

Regards

Jose

Re: SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

Thanks for your reply, Chhaya

Mount iso image as a disk F: in win 7 using a free sw called PowerIso, then is just copy n paste in another folder.

Re: SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

Hi,

Not able to identify the issue if the MD5 checked out and yet the files are corrupted.

You can try writing the iso to a CD/DVD.

Or the below link has some resources on SE.

Re: SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

If you have access to Ubuntu or Fedora Live CD mounting/extracting an iso is very easy there.

‘mount -o loop -t iso9660 foo.iso /mountpoint'

Re: SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

Hi thanks for your reply.

I tried other options but none of them worked, even using PowerIso in windows, with same result, pdf error.

I open a case in the support centre because in the iso image I did not find any installation executable for Linux and I am going to use this case to solve all my questions.

TIA regards

Jose

Re: SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

Hi,

The latest, current, SE 9.5.0 documentation is available via the SSO portal:

http://support.openview.hp.com/selfsolve/manuals

search for "storage essentials srm" version 9.5.0

Regarding the ISOs, it is important to merge the ISO parts for both the SE Management Server and Report Optimizer ISOs before an installation can continue. Only the database ISO is a complete image, not requiring assembly, the details are provided on the download portal in the "get Documentation" tab, in a welcome letter and readme. I've compiled the materials here. I suggest downloading the 8 total ISO parts (3 for Mgr, 1 for DB, 4 for RO), then verify the parts MD5, assemble the parts, and re-verify the complete images. I would strongly suggest mounting the verified ISO images directly instead of extracting their contents to assure a successful installation.

Note: Storage Essentials is not customer installable, a professional services, or trained channel partner is required.

Re: SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

I'm really going to have to fix my subscriptions so I get notifications for this forum... seems that it was reset again. :-)

If you are an employee, you can get temp keys directly - contact me for instructions.

If you are a partner, you (hopefully) can find the links on the SWPP where you download the SE ISOs.

If you are a customer, you would work with SE pre-sales or PSO to get a teporary license.

We do generally avoid just throwing temp/eval keys over the wall to folks, and strongly recommend working with the pre-sales team to help qualify the environment, set expectations, assist in installation, configuration, and go through some of details.

If you have any questions, feel free to ping me back!

Re: SE 9.5 Storage Essentials suite

You start with the core product MAPs, based on ports. Then any add-on modules, which are based on MAL, Array or User. In some cases you can limit discovery (don't discover hosts, block discovery of GuestOS, exclusion for some arrays via serial #). Though the value with SE comes with its visibility end-to-end for most folks - so you want to assure at minimum it can discover all arrays and fabrics - then choose the best approach for hosts and possibly apps. You can get a lot agentlessly, firstly using inferred logic (rules) and only if that is insufficient, look at discovery of hosts via agent or agentless methods. There are additional details in the User Guide available for download on the SSO portal, as well as built-in to the products online help system.

From the QuickSpecs (edited by me).

License to use (LTU) Definitions:

  • "MAP" =  Managed Access Port
  • "MAL" =  Managed Application License specific to a software application, database, node, instance or server:
    • SE Application Viewer
      • Oracle Database
      • IBM Informix Database
      • Sybase Database
      • Microsoft SQL Server
      • Microsoft Exchange Server
  • SE File System Viewer
  • SE NAS Manager
  • SE Backup Manager
  • “CC User” = Concurrent User

Used by SE Report Optimizer to enable custom/ad-hoc reporting, licensed by the amount of simultaneous users.
Custom report generation capabilities will require a minimum purchase of 1 CC User license.

  • "Array"

Used by SE Performance Pack Array & SE Performance Pack Enterprise plug-ins.
Each LTU will enable performance monitoring of a single supported storage device distinguished by name and serial number.

The following details how to determine the number of MAP licenses required:

Interconnect devices:

  • Add up the number of GBIC/SFPs installed in the fabric switches.
For a fully populated switch (i.e., all blades are installed and all ports in all blades have SFPs installed), all ports are counted towards MAPs total.

Example: A Fibre Channel switch with 64 ports containing SFP will consume 1 MAP per port totaling to 64 MAPs.

  • For NPiV only the physical ports are counted for the fabric switch.

Note: If no interconnect devices are discovered; count the number of ports in the storage infrastructure and managed hosts

Storage Infrastructure:

  • All managed storage device controller ports count (for example SMI-S or an API is used to discover the device).

Example: If the storage device has 8 Fibre Channel (FC) ports, it will count as 8 MAPs.
Note: The number of MAPs counted for a storage device is typically specific to FC ports, however in certain cases all physical connections, independent of protocol, including FC, SCSI, ESCON, FICON, Ethernet, or Gigabyte Ethernet.

  • HP P4000 StoreVirtual - Cluster nodes are counted as 1 MAP each, iSCSI initiators are counted as 1 MAP each.
  • HP X9000 StoreAll - Each file server node/segment server is counted as 10 MAPs.
  • HP B6200 StoreOnce - Each node is counted as 5 MAPs.

Note: A generic storage device placeholder is not managed and therefore does not consume MAPs.

Managed Hosts:

  • A SAN attached server discovered via CIM Extension will count each FC Host Bus Adapter (HBA) port as 1 MAP.
Example: A dual ported HBA will count as 2 MAPs.
  • A standalone server with no FC HBA discovered via CIM Extension will count as 1 MAP
  • A Windows server discovered agentlessly via WMI will count as 1 MAP minimum or 1 MAP per FC HBA port.
  • A Linux server discovered agentlessly via SSH will count as 1 MAP minimum or 1 MAP per FC HBA port.
  • VMware hypervisors (VMware ESX servers) discovered agentlessly will be treated as physical servers and count 1 MAP min or 1 MAP per FC HBA port.

Example, 5 ESX servers with 2 dual ported HBAs counts as 10 MAPs (5*2=10)
Note: VMware Gust OS running VMTools are discovered automatically by default.

  • Each VMware Virtual Machine Guest OS discovered automatically via VMTools with will count as 1 MAP.
  • Each VMware Virtual Machine Guest OS discovered directly via WMI (Windows) or SSH (Linux), or CIM Extension will count as 1 MAP.
Note: A VMware Virtual Machine Guest OS discovery via VMTools, and subsequently discovered via agentless WMI or CIM Extension counts as only 1 MAP.

Note2: A generic host object container or rule-based inferred host are not managed hosts and therefore do not count against MAPs.
Note3: A Data Protector Cell Manager discovered via SE Backup Manager MAL will not count any MAPs.

The following details how to determine the number of MAL licenses required:

Standalone Applications:

  • SE Application Viewer for Databases, Exchange  and File System Viewer
    • Microsoft Exchange Server instance = An Exchange Server that hosts many mailboxes requires 1 Application Viewer MAL.
    • Oracle Database instance = 1 unique Oracle Database instance (SID) serving an Oracle database requires 1 Application Viewer MAL.
    • Microsoft SQL Database Instance = 1 MS SQL Instance which may contain many database underneath requires 1 Application Viewer MAL.
    • A File System Viewer server (managed host with SE CIM Extension) enabled for collection against one or more local, SAN or network volumes requires 1 Application Viewer MAL.
Note: Manually defined Virtual Applications created for use in SE Chargeback Manager do not consume MALs.
    • SE NAS Manager
      • 1 NAS Manager MAL for each NetApp, EMC Celerra or EMC Centera physical node

Note: NetApp devices support a built-in “Performance Pack” functionality automatically enabled via the NAS Manager MAL.

  • SE Backup Manager
    • 1 Backup Manager MAL per Master Server or Cell Manager.

Clustered Applications:

  • Oracle, Microsoft SQL and Microsoft Exchange failover clusters = 1 Application Viewer MAL per application/database instance.
For example to manage an MS Exchange Instance running on a 3 node failover cluster requires 1 Application Viewer MAL.
  • 1 MS Exchange Application Instance = An Exchange Server cluster that hosts many mailboxes requires 1 Application Viewer MAL.
  • Oracle RAC = 1 MAL per RAC instance
Example: A 10 instance Oracle RAC serving a single database requires 10 Application Viewer MALs.

HP Storage Essentials Report Optimizer Software Concurrent User License Definition and Usage:

  • Licensed by the amount of users that simultaneously use the software at any one point in time for custom/ad-hoc reporting purposes.

Licensing based on a per Array basis (for Performance Pack Plug-ins):

Array LTU licensing is determined by the count of multivendor arrays concurrently monitored. For example, if you have 1 supported array you wish to monitor in your Storage Area Network; all you need is 1 - Array LTU. You can also move a license from one supported array to another. For example, the customer has 4 arrays, but only 2 LTUs. If the customer wants to view a snapshot of performance data, on any of the 4 arrays with 2 LTUs, they can. By doing so, you will only collect real-time performance data, without interruption, on licensed arrays. As you move a license around from monitoring arrays, you will not collect historical data on unlicensed arrays; therefore you will see data collections gaps in your collected data. For some customers this is acceptable; for a customer who prefers a complete historical performance history then you want to have 1-Array LTU per monitored array. The same logic applies to purchasing HP Storage Essentials Performance Pack software LTU and HP Storage Essentials Performance Pack Enterprise software LTU.

  • HP Storage Essentials Performance Pack Array Plug-in
    • Supported arrays:
      • HP EVA P6000
      • HP 3PAR F/S/T-Series & StoreServ 7x00
      • HP Storage Essentials Performance Pack Enterprise Plug-in
        • Supported arrays:
          • HP 3PAR V-Series & StoreServ 1x000
          • HP XP P9000
          • EMC Symmetrix (VMAX, DMX)
          • IBM SVC & V7000
