Analytics, big data and the software-defined datacenter

Guest post by Ian Bromehead, Sr Product Marketing Manager, HP Software

History shows us that with every new transformational technology, you need new tools to manage the increased levels of complexity. This was true when IT organizations moved from mainframes to client-server, then again as they implemented web-based applications. It is still true now as new applications are being deployed to support the growing adoption of mobile, social, big data and cloud.  The transition to the Software-Defined Datacenter (SDDC) is no exception.  A new category of management software is required to manage the dynamic components and complexity of the SDDC – it’s called operations analytics. Basically it is applying the power of big data to help operations staff make sense of the massive amount of both structure and unstructured data generated by IT infrastructure and applications.

Splunk was one of the first vendors to offer a product in this category. They refer to it as operations intelligence. VMware acquired a company called Cetas last year. They integrated the Cetas software in to vCenter, and now they call it vCenter Log Insight. HP also offers a product called Operations Analytics that analyzes data from operations, logs and events.

This is an important topic, so we asked industry analyst, Bernd Harzog of The Virtualization Practice, for his perspective on analytics and the SDDC. Bernd is a highly regarded industry expert in virtualization and cloud management.

Bernd recently published a report on this topic entitled, “The Business Benefits of the Software-Defined Datacenter”. It includes a two sections regarding management software. You can download a copy of this report here.

This video is the fourth in a four-part series of videos that is published in this blog regarding the software-defined datacenter. Part 3 in the series provides an overview of the essential components required in the management software.  It is closely related to the discussion on analytics, so you may want to click here to watch the video.

The first video in the series provided a clear explanation of the software-defined datacenter. You can watch the video by clicking here. The second video focused on the business benefits of the SDDC

We developed this tutorial on the SDDC to provide you with some useful information. The authors welcome your questions and comments. For additonal information on this topic and free software from HP, please check the following links:
