QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

[ Edited ]

So hopefully I can type this so it makes some sense.  I need to perform two tasks: Upgrade all current projects from QC 9.2 to QC 10.0(and 11.5 later) & change from Oracle 9i DB to 10g DB.

I did the following:

-Had our DBA copy the project schemas from the 9i DB to the 10g DB.

-Upgraded projectA from 9.2 to version 10.

-Removed, changed to 10g DB in dbid.xml file, restored projectA.

-Ran verify and repair and logged in fine.

-Removed, changed to 10g DB in dbid.xml file, restored projectB.

-Upgraded projectB from 9.2 to version 10.

-Got error(log attached) during the upgrade step(verify/repair were fine).

My issues are this:

-When projectA was upgraded from 9.2 -> 10.0 the 9i DB was upgraded.  When I changed to the 10g DB it should have reverted to 9.2, but it showed as being version 10.0.  I was able to login to the project fine.  Is this okay?

-projectB got an error.  Is this because QC 9.2 is not supported on Oracle 10g so it caused upgrade from 9.2 -> 10.0 to fail?

-Is there any other order I should be doing this in? Maybe this order:

   =upgrade projectC from 9.2 to 10

   =have DBA copy upgraded schema from 9i to 10g

   =change DB from 9i to 10g

Thanks for any help, comments, or ideas.  They are very-much appreciated.

Re: QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

the safest way to do an upgrade is to secure the database/schema/project repository backups.

 i think what you should have done is

upgrade the database/schema to 10g

edit the dbid.xml (if you changed any parameters here e.g connection string or db name)

verify/repair/upgrade projects

and this is one project at a time.

Re: QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

sdeff,

unless I am misunderstanding your steps that is precisely what I did with projectB(the one that failed).

-Had dba copy schema from 9i to 10g

-Removed, changed to 10g DB in dbid.xml file, restored projectB.

-Verifed/Repaired/Upgraded projectB from 9.2 to version 10.

-Got error(log attached) during the upgrade step.

Re: QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

questions,

1. do you have QC9 and QC10 running in parallel (they are both live now) ?

2. when you say you upgrade your db from 9i to 10g, do you mean that you use the same database server (machine)

My idea is that, when you move your schema to 10g did you run the qc server configuration again?

Because the server configuration must be the one to upgrade the schema, this is the option "upgrade the existing schema" or "upgrade a copy of the existing schema"

then you can transfer your proj databases from 9i to 10g

then edit the dbid.xml per proj to point to the new location of the databases

now, you can restore the projs and run the verify/repair/upgrade

one thing i can see that may have caused your issue is that, before you run the verify/repair/upgrade your databases are already in version 10g.
make sure your databases are still in version 9i before you restore the project and upgrade.

these are all based on my experience when i did migration and upgrade. I've done this

1. QC10 to QC 11.0

2.ALM 11.0 to ALM 11.5

3. QC10 to ALM 11.0

if you want to make sure of the steps i think it is better that experts from HP support to handle this.

have you raised a service request to hp support?

Re: QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

I upgraded from QC 9.2 on Oracle 9g to QC 11.0 on oracle 11g.

I followed below steps and it worked, If you want, you can try below:

1) Copy schema (both qcsiteadmin schema and all project schemas) from oracle 9g DB to oracle 10g DB. Make sure permissions on oracle 10g DB is same as that on oracle 9g. By permission, i mean permissions for the DBA account (the same acc which is specified in DB servers tab of Site Admin)

2) I am assuming you will be using the same file repository for QC 10 which you used for QC 9.2

3) Install QC 10 on new application server. Here specify the old qcsiteadmin schema while installation & upgrade a copy of it while installation when it asks for it

4) After Installation finshes, start QC services

5) Login to site admin in QC 10. Remove all the projects (Remove & don't delete)

6) Go to DB servers tab abd see if new oracle 10g DB is there showing or not. It will show. If not, you can add the new DB here also

7) Logout and bring QC services down

8) Now modify dbid.xml files in file repository (DB name, connection string). You will need to change physical directory path too in dbid.xml file if you are using new file repository too

8) Start QC services.

9) Log in siteadmin & restore all projects. for test, you can first try to restore a single proj only

10) Run verify tool. When verify finishes, it will say found some issue which can be fixed by repair tool. After that run repair tool,

11) When repair finishes, it will either say repair finished sucessfully. If it says so, then you are good to go with upgrade tool. If it says, found some issues which needs to be fixed manually, then do so.

12) After that again run verify, repair tool again. After that upgrade.

13) Once upgrade finishes sucessfully, make the proj active and try to login.

Please follow these steps and let us know how it goes.

Re: QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

[ Edited ]

Sorry I should have been more clear with the current state...

   -Right now the SA schema is v 10.0 on Oracle 9i DB(I am 98% sure its still on 9i, but how can I confirm this)

   -some projects are 9.2 and some are 10.0

   -a copy was taken of the schemas on the 9i DB and moved to a seperate 10g DB

goals:

   -my goal is to get all projects to v10.0 and moved to the 10g DB

   -after that(eventually) I am to upgrade the SA schema/QC projs to version 11.5(2) and export the projects to a seperately set up ALM/PC stack

that all being said, I believe from all of the help on this thread the process should be:

   -upgrade project from 9.2 to 10 while dbid.xml is on 9i DB

   -have DBA copy upgraded schema from 9i to 10g

   -remove the project from SA

   -change DB from 9i to 10g in dbid.xml

   -restore the project into SA

   -run the verify and repair tool

   OR

   -have DBA copy 9.2 schema from 9i to 10g

   -remove the project from SA

   -change DB from 9i to 10g in dbid.xml

   -restore the project into SA

   -run the verify, repair, and upgrade tool

Re: QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

[ Edited ]

   -have DBA copy 9.2 schema from 9i to 10g

  -run QC server configuration wizard to upgrade existing schema (i assume you already installed QC 10)

   -remove the project from SA

   -change DB from 9i to 10g in dbid.xml

   -restore the project into SA

   -run the verify, repair, and upgrade tool

Re: QC 9.2 -> 10.0 upgrade and DB 9i -> 10g questions

Okay great, thank you both so much!!!

I am assuming this step is a one time thing(to upgrade SA from 9i ->10g)

 -run QC server configuration wizard to upgrade existing schema (i assume you already installed QC 10)
