How do you define true application lifecycle management?

With the holidays behind us now, it seems like such a long time ago.  But multiple announcements were made by HP at our HP Discover 2011 event around new Information Optimization and Cloud solutions including new HP IT Performance Suite editions to the release of HP Business Service Management (BSM) 9.1 and HP Application Lifecycle Intelligence (ALI) 2.0. While it was great to hear all the buzz, why would you as an IT expert care?

In my opinion, key themes and discussion points at the show centered around mobile computing, application transformation and the move to hybrid or cloud environments which carried the “buzz.”  We also had a live demo of HP Application Lifecycle Management (ALM) that filled the house – even at 8 a.m.in the morning after the big “Discover party.”  This demo showed the power of HP to bring together multiple product solutions to help you manage some of your most perplexing challenges including and featuring the new HP IT Executive Scorecard.

This brings me to my next point…why HP Project and Portfolio Management (PPM) and HP Application Portfolio Management (APM) are so important to ALM…

A successful ALM strategy requires a holistic view of the entire application lifecycle including planning, development and operations. It also requires management of strategic control points—the critical gates along the application lifecycle where business visibility and buy-in is most crucial. These control points serve as the critical link between the business and IT, enabling IT and the business to stay connected and focused on what really matters. PPM – along with APM act as that central point of control for the entire application lifecycle.

Also, HP’s view of the application lifecycle begins with the business justification and aggregation of all projects that are to be executed within the same development and release pipeline. This requires portfolio prioritization which extends through the development cycle, service and security policies, delivery, production monitoring and

change management. Without HP PPM Center, APM and their strategic workflow controls and visibility, organizations would not be able to realize true ALM.

Besides, customer after customer has reported a significant return on investment after implementing their HP PPM implementation
