My server (DL380 G5) goes into standby randomly

Hi all.

I have a Proliant server, DL380 G5, which goes into standby randomly, without any error in ILO 2 log or HP Insight Management log. On the Systems Insight Display front panel, the VRM1 is lighted and is yellow. Also Internal health LED is lighted red and is blinking.   In my interpretation the problem is the first VRM of the first processor. But i have changed the VRM with another new one but the problem still persist. What else could be?

 I attached a short movie with this error.

Re: My server (DL380 G5) goes into standby randomly

Check that the PPM is firmly screewed down?

Were the processor(s) removed ever before?  If so, Did you clean and re-apply thermal grease applied between it and the heatsink? (of course HP does not recommend doing this yourself...)

Check the cable routing and baffles so that there is no blockage of air movement.

Re: My server (DL380 G5) goes into standby randomly

Hi John, and thanks for your reply.
I will describe the actions taked by me to try to solve this problem:
1. i replaced the older VRM with new one; for two days i left with only one processor in CPU slot one; also i applied a new thermal grease based on Ag to increase the thermal transfer rate to the heatsink
2. even with one CPU the server had goes into standby for two times, randomly, with the same symptoms on the Systems Insight Display;
3. I checked the ILO 2 and Insight Management log - no problems signaled there;
4. i checked also if the PPM is firmly screwed; i removed each and clean up the contacts...
5. i checked the air flow... ;

By the way, i had read the service manual before to do all i mentioned before.

[ Edited ]

It is good that you updated the ILo firmware, but you still need to update the rest of the server. (There ar known issues that are fixed since your current version)  The best way to update this is with the Firmware DVD, here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=53...

This DVD will update every component in the server including the HDDs if needed.

If you do not want to download the DVD,you should at least update the system firmware, here:

http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodTypeId=53...

Enjoy!
