Does anyone know what may have caused the error and how to correct it?

Have you had any responses to this, or were you able to resolve the problem at some point? I'm getting the same error message for a Color LaserJet 9000 DN.

Yes, you should definitely try a different printer driver first. Many service errors are resolved when switching drivers. However, changing the printer driver didn't work for me.
I was able to resolve the 49.4C02 service error by downloading the current firmware version for my HP printer. If you search for your printer model on the HP site, you should be able to find the most current firmware and instructions for installation.
The upgrade process took about 20 minutes.
