error 0x0000007e with hp universal printing pcl 6

hello,

Y use a windows server 2008 r2 print server for HP dell and Ricoh printers.

When I try to connect to a HP printer with a computer with vista32 or seven32, if the driver insn't installed on the computer, a dilog box propose me to install it and after I see a dialog box "windows can't connect the printer. Impossible to finish the operation (error 0x0000007e)." it's a translation of a dialog box in french language.

Y have the same problem with all our HP printers (LJ5000, LJ5100, P2015), using HP Universal Print Driver PCL6 v5.1.0.1. if I do the connection with a XP or 2003 server workstation, all works very well.

after the first install, I see the the hp driver in the printer drivers list on the W7/vista computer, if I try a second time, I see directly the error dialog box.

If I remove the driver in the list, it's the same as in the 1st case.

I have the same problem with a kickstart script

w7 and vista can connect to Ricoh and dell printers using the same method

all printers are connected to the network.

How to solve this problem

Pascal

Re: error 0x0000007e with hp universal printing pcl 6

[ Edited ]

I had the same problem, printer p2015 unable to connect to it from a 7 x86, let it be home or ultimate. Server running 2003 x86. I tried installing the driver from windows 7 x86 and x64 to the print server and it didn't worked.

BUT.

I just tried something today.

I've download the latest universel driver from p3015 (it's 6.1, august 2010), push them to my p2015 and it worked! My windows 7 x86 can now connect to the printer.

I had a similar issue with a P3015 printer that wasn't able to connect from a x64 machine even when I pushed the driver, error 07e again. This solved it too.

Edit: Oh btw, in the list of drivers, when I browsed to the universal driver folder, I'ved selected the inf "hpcu107c.inf" (in case it does change something).

Re: error 0x0000007e with hp universal printing pcl 6

delete or rename following folder in your registry on your printserver:

HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Printers\PRINTERNAME\CopyFiles <-- rename this folder to f.e. CopyFiles_old

that solved my problem

Hi,

There is also a MS KB Article released for the same issue by Microsoft.
Just an additional information to have it on this post.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/982728

"Windows cannot connect to printer" error message when you try to create a Point and Print connection to a remote printer from a Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2-based client computer"

Thanks

Two years later I'm having the same issue. I had tried several different fixes and none of them had worked. Then I stumbled upon this suggestion by Benedikt Däumling. Worked like a charm! Thanks so much! I owe you a beer.

Benedik,

Thank you very much for posting this solution.  This error would come up from time to time. Sometimes changing the print driver would fix it. Other times, like today not so much. You solution put an end to an otherwise frustrating  morning.  Thank you again.

Best Regards,

Bob

Re: error 0x0000007e with hp universal printing pcl 6

I want to try this fix, but I don't have this folder:

HKLM\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Print\Printers\PRINTERNAME\CopyFiles

I'm running a Server 2008 R2 system for our print server.  Any ideas what else I could try changing?
