When printing black, why does cyan run out?

I can't get a simple answer from HP support because my Color Laserjet 2550n is no longer sold in stores.  My simple question is, "Why does cyan run out when I print only black?"  One would think only black toner is used to print black.

Thanks in advance for any info.

Re: When printing black, why does cyan run out?

Be sure that the printer is setup to print Grayscale or Black and not color within its driver.

If any setting tells the printer to use color, the printer will use the 3 colors to form black.

I suspect that this is exactly what is happening.

Re: When printing black, why does cyan run out?

That's a great place to start. Thanks! However, when looking at the default setting, the colors are turned off for grayscale.  It's still strange for a simple task of using black toner to print black depletes cyan.  There have been times when the black toner does deplete, but this is the first time I've seen cyan empty for a completely black, print job.  Is there another place to check?
