Problems using USB to parallel cable adapter for LaserJet 4200?

I am about to buy the above adapter cable as I have a new computer without a parallel port and with the new Windows 7 (64 bit).

I have heard that there are many problems. Any suggestions as to the best cable to get? Anything else that I should consider or not do?

Thanks,

Mark

Mark,

A USB to parallel converter often recommended on these forums is the Sewell.

I'm not suer what sort of parallel connector is at the printer end so you might also need the following ...

The cable above is the correct one. Another option is putting a jetdirect eio network card in one of the eio slots on the printer. You can get 610N network cards very cheap on ebay and they work just fine.

Re: Problems using USB to parallel cable adapter for LaserJet 4200?

I have a large centronics coupler on the printer side so I don't need an adapter but I have the 25 pin connector on the other side so the Sewell cable adapter won't fit and the other one (Sabrent) has gotten bad reviews.

Any other suggestions?

Mark,

You don't use your existing parallel cable but replace it with the Sewell or as David suggested, try a JetDirect card.

Sewell cable is an adapter cable that attaches to your existing parallel cable. I looked at the pictures of this cable and it looks like it can only attach to your cable not the centronics port of the printer.

Re: Problems using USB to parallel cable adapter for LaserJet 4200?

Mark,

No, it completely replaces it! The parallel end of the Sewell plugs into your printer and the USB end into your computer.
