Problem with form printout one-sided and two-sided

Hello!

we have several HP printers and with all of them the same problem to print on forms:

the forms are in tray 2 and white paper is in tray 3.

We mostly use word documents which we want to print one-sided and two-sided on paper.

In these word documents the first page is configured for tray 2 and the other pages for tray 3.

When we print one-sided, the first page is printed correctly (also the others are correct).

When we print two-sided, the first page is printed on the back side of the form paper. The other pages are printed correctly on white paper two-sided.

How can the driver/printer or the word document be configured that the first page is printed correctly in two-sided print?

Thank you!

With best regards!

Wolfgang

Re: Problem with form printout one-sided and two-sided

With many (but not all) modern laser printers, 'sided' media (like Letterhead or Prepunched stationery) has to be loaded in to the cassette tray(s) of the printer in one orientation for simplex jobs, but a different one for duplex jobs; for example, for the Colour LaserJet CP3525 printer:

  • for 1-sided (simplex) printing, load media "Face up; Top edge at the right side of the tray"
  • for 2-sided (duplex) printing, load media "Face down; Top edge at the left side of the tray"

which means that such paper has to be loaded in different ways according to whether it will be printed in Simplex or Duplex mode.

To get around this, some printers (including the Colour LaserJet CP3525), offer an Alternative LetterHead Mode, which, if set On (the default is Off), changes the loading instructions; e.g.:

  • for 1-sided (simplex) printing, load media "Face down; Top edge at the left side of the tray"
  • for 2-sided (duplex) printing, load media "Face down; Top edge at the left side of the tray"

so that such paper can be loaded in the same way for both Simplex and Duplex mode jobs.

The paper loading instructions will vary from device to device, depending on the physical layout of the trays, and the mechanics of the paper path; you'd need to check with the User Guide manual(s) for the printer model(s) in question to ascertain the correct instructions.

The Alternative LetterHead Mode setting (On or Off) is usually done on the printer (via front panel menus, or Embedded Web Server or Toolbox equivalent), but I think that some printers may accept the setting programmatically (probably via PJL or PML command in the print job PJL ''header').

I don't believe that choosing a different paper source for "first page" should make any difference to the above, but you will probably have to ensure that the first page specifies a PaperType of Letterhead.
