LaserJet 5550 - will not recognize trays 3 & 4

We just recently replaced our LJ5500 with a LJ 5550 but kept the extra trays 3&4 to use with the new model. The printer has been installed on the tray assembly but does not recognize them. This extra tray device has the same part number as a new device. We were told it would be compatible by our HP dealer. What does it take to make these trays work?

Re: LaserJet 5550 - will not recognize trays 3 & 4

This could be one of the problem with parts HP put into the mix.

this is how it works.

the extra tray device for the 5500 will have the same part no/ as the device for the 5550 because the 5550 device is backwards compatable and will work on the 5500 this cuts down on the amount of parts that needs to be produced and stocked. but the older tray device for the 5500 is not forwards compatable to the 5550

hope this helps

Re: LaserJet 5550 - will not recognize trays 3 & 4

So then Mark is there any way to visually identify which trays are the older 5500 exclusive ones and which ones will work with both a 5500 and a 5550? This would be great to know as I have inherited a shop that mixed a few of these up and we are trying to identify which is which.

Re: LaserJet 5550 - will not recognize trays 3 & 4

My research only shows 2 part numbers for the tray and C7130A and C7130B and there is also a part number of C7130-67902 and all of these show as being correct for both models. If you could provide any part number like the ones above that the tray 3 or tray 4 has on the feeder itself it would go a long way towards resolving this issue. As Mark said it is possible the 5500 came with a different model number tray 3 or 4 which will only work on that series and all the newer ones will work on both, but I would like to do a bit more research on this.

Re: LaserJet 5550 - will not recognize trays 3 & 4

Hi guys,

I have a lj5500dn. I've developed a problem with paper tray 2 and am looking for a replacement. Please advise which would work?

c7130b
RG5-6647-210

I actaully just need the paper cassette, but if i need to i will buy the whole tray add-on.

Thanks,
William

otherwise if you print a configuration page from the machine.are those trays listed on there?if so they may need to be marked as installed/enabled on the driver properties/device settings.

if not showing up on that page then it may be the part issue mentioned above.

Re: LaserJet 5550 - will not recognize trays 3 & 4

Razmat,

Thanks for the prompt reply.

I'm not sure I understand your response.

My physical paper cassette for Tray 2 appears to be having a physical problem lifting the paper. A clicking noise is heard.

I am looking for a replacement. I was looking for guidance as to the correct part to buy. C7130A's are hard to come by on the web, but C7130B's look to be available. I really just need a replacement cassette. Is the cassette from the C7130B usable in the Tray 2 slot?

Thanks.

Just want to add that the problem may not be the cassette but the lifting motor. Also make sure the back stop is in the right place. If the backstop is pushed to far forward the paper can not lift. You should be able to move the lifting piece on the right side of the tray which has like notches.

Re: LaserJet 5550 - will not recognize trays 3 & 4

Thanks guys- this thread was helpful. I wish HP would have mentioned that when I purchased this as an upgrade to the 5500's (which they were aware of. I was trying to save $10,000 in trays and they said it would work.

I also find it interesting that even if tray 3 is the new model and 4 and 5 are the old model, none of the accessory trays are detected. If any old model is installed, no trays work basically. Utter insanity.
