LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

Has anyone received this error?

PCL XL error
Subsystem: Kernel
Error: MissingAttribute
Operator: BeginPage
Position: 3

I receive this error only when trying to print 2180 mini avery labels in MS Word 97, every other label size and other print job is just fine.

I have the correct updated Windows XP drivers installed.

I've seen this case, but it seems to be a different problem, but I tried the fixes and it didn't resolve my problem.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

I can't open your referenced page, but as it didn't resolve your problem, it probably doesn't matter anyway.

If your problem is repeatable at will, repeat it (with a small document), but check the 'print to file' option in the driver.

Then post the generated file here as an attachment; analysis might indicate which attribute is missing (I suspect that MediaSize is the culprit), and hence might suggest a possible resolution or workaround.

If the missing attribute IS MediaSize, this would seem to suggest that either the application, or the printer driver, does not recognise the paper size associated with those labels.

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

Analysis of your attachment shows that the attribute list of the BeginPage operator contains only two attributes: Orientation (=Portrait) and MediaSource (=ManualFeed). But there is no MediaSize attribute (which is usually mandatory). There is a PJL statement which indicates that the paper is Letter size (but this wil not provide a default for the PCL XL attribute).

But there is also no indication of any data after the BeginPage, and before the corresponding EndPage (there are some operators setting up a dither pattern, and the clip mode, but these are not in themselves 'page marking' operations). Did your source document have any real data for these labels?

This tends to support what I suggested before; either the Application (Word97?) or the printer driver, does not support your chosen label format.
But which is at fault, or how to circumvent this, I can't say (sorry).

Anyway, attached is the analysis of your print file

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

It might be informative to do a 'print to file' with a label format that you know works, and let us see how the contents of that file differs.

Navid,

Are you using a PCL6 driver? If so, try switching to the PCL5 or PS.

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

I am using the PCL 6 driver, and I tried printing with the PCL 5, but i have problems printing all together with that driver.

I don't know why this would be a problem.

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

Navid,

Did you install these patches that were listed for Office 97? The SR-1 has to be installed then the SR-2.

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

Hello Pat,

SR2 was on for Office 97, prior to changing the drivers, I wouldn't need to apply the SR2 again after changing to PCL5 would i?

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

Not if it's already been installed. The driver's for the printer not the Office application.

I don't think Microsoft Office does updates for 97 any more, but you can check to see if there's anything that may be listed.

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/officeupdate/default.aspx

Position signifies where the incorrect attribut is located and it needs to be corrected.

The following details.

Missing Attribute:

PCL XL:

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

Thanks Pat,

I did some more testing, the problem ocurrs ONLY when i use the MINI label paper size (4 1/4" X 5") all other label paper sizes print fine. If i change the paper size to letter and keep the same label dimensions it will print fine too, albeit not on the label paper but on letter head. This seems to only have to be a problem with the printer drivers support for this paper size, it doesn't matter which computer you are on, the results are the same.

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

I already did check the windows updates and the office updates, all are installed, no further ones are available or exist.

I'm not sure what else to conclude other than this must be a problem with the printer driver recognizing the label size, other printers print fine,. and this same printer printed fine prior to upgrading to Windows XP (which changes the driver obviously).

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

The printer is reverse compatible so you can use an older printer driver if it works.

And, you're welcome.

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

I believe it's possible if compatible. You might also try the 2000 driver.

Re: LASERJET 3330 mfp PCL XL ERROR MISSING ATTRIBUTE

Your print to file 'for a successful print' aslo requests (both in PJL and PCL XL) a media (paper) size of "Letter".

I think we can conclude that either Word, or the printer driver is at fault, but we can't determine which on the available evidence.

Attached is an analysis of your 'print to file', in case it points anyone else in the right direction.

I had PCL6 drivers - installing PCL5 drivers worked!

Thanks!
