HP software finding my P3005D

I have a P3005D printer off of a printer port on my router. In the Windows control panel for Printers and Faxes the port is shown as:

"D-Link LPT port"

since my router is a D-Link 714P+.

I am able to print to my P3005D without any problems.

However I am not able to use any HP program to update the printer software in any way. In particular the "Easy Printer Care" program can not find the printer and in fact fails on invocation with a cryptic error message.

Does anyone else have a business printer off of a router or adapter's LPT port ? if so, is there any way to get the HP sofware to "find" the printer so it can update it with new drivers or firmware. Not being able to do so bothers me, although the printer is still working properly.

When I tried to talk to an HP representative via online chat about this I was told that since my warranty is a one year warranty, they do not offer any support after that year whatsoever.
