Have you tried another toner cartridge?

Re: HP LaserJet 4050 makes unusual noise while printing

Another source of strange noises in the 4000/4050 series are the feed and seperation rollers used in tray 2&3. As they become worn they make a growling sound. The replacement part # is RF5-1885-000CN. If the noise is definitely in the transfer roller area, changing out the toner cartridge would be the thing to try first.

Re: HP LaserJet 4050 makes unusual noise while printing

Please define 'unsual noise'. Squeaking, high pitched, low pitched, constant, only when pulling paper?
Just a bit more info would be very helpful, at least from here.
