HP 4700n won't print to default tray

Hello,
We have an HP 4700n color laserjet, all settings are configured to print to tray 2 by default (desired). However, all print jobs are going to tray 1, even though tray 1 is closed. Since there's no paper in tray 1, it prompts me to select another tray. So I select tray 2, the print job completes, and the process is repeated for all other jobs.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: HP 4700n won't print to default tray

Your print job don't have the needed command to select the tray.

Wihch Operating System are you using?

Also check in the driver and application, the configuration for paper size and paper type

Re: HP 4700n won't print to default tray

Thanks for the reply.
We hace Advanced Server 2003, all drivers are up to date.
Everything printing is configured for letter size.

I've read those pages, and set the printer to choose exclusively and first, didn't work.

Re: HP 4700n won't print to default tray

This happens to any file from any application?

Can you print a printer's configuration page from tray 2?

Have you tried restoring the default settings?

I had a similar problem with my LaserJet 4250n (several of them) , the cause was the application, it don't know how handle paper sizes and paper types, so I download HP Web Jetadmin:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/pscmisc/vac/us/en/en/network_software/wja_overview.html

and in the Configuration section, I configured my printers to accept any size and type to tray 2 with no timeout. The problem disappeared immediately.

Re: HP 4700n won't print to default tray

this is the million dollar question- and I cant get a step by step answer to this problem.

I have tried multiple websites- help forums and links.

I have tried restore factory defaults- and every setting I have found on line.

Has ANYONE had success switching to tray 2 as the default tray?  Can you send step by step instructions?

Worst part for me is that when this was first set up - IT DID draw from tray 2 first.

help

please

it's maddening

Re: HP 4700n won't print to default tray

heh - just got a notification that someone had replied to this posting- and come to check it- and there's no new posts.  Eight months and no reply ...I have read post after post that fixes this- and none of them do.

seriously - can anyone send step by step instructions- not just links to other posts about this problem?

Re: HP 4700n won't print to default tray

Problem: Unable to print Letter media from Tray 2.

Terrese was unable to print from Tray2,  the printer always requested to use Tray 1 and to load Tray 1 even when the requested print was to use Tray 2.

Analysis & Explanation of why this is behaving this way:

I looked at the menu setting on the printer for Tray 2 and found that the printer indicated Tray 2 was loaded with  the media size “Any Custom”, but the physical media that was loaded was “Letter”  This likely means that the blue paper guides inside Tray 2 have been inadvertently moved when media was loaded, so that the printer now senses that the paper loaded in Tray 2 is considered to be a custom size media.

Solution:

Move the blue media guides on Tray 2 to be set to “Letter”  (Assuming you have letter media loaded).

Steps:

A) Open Tray 2 and remove media from Tray 2

B) Lift the front of Tray 2 and pull out, and remove the tray from the printer.

C) Adjust both of the blue guides to be set at “Letter”

D) Re-install the tray and media into Tray 2

E) Verify the size for Tray 2 is now set to “Letter”, and not “Any Custom”
