HP 2420 Paper Jam 13.01.00

My HP 2420 will not print from Tray 2. It tries to pick up the paper and then says I have a paper jam - 13.01.00. It's not jamming but just not picking up the paper. If I clear it a few times sometimes it will print one page but then jam again. So for the last week I have had to use Tray 1...Not sure if I need to replace a part and which part or just clean off something inside or what.

Heather:

Please take the Tray 2 out and make sure the Pape Size Selector at the back of the Tray is set correctly to Letter. I have seen a lot of the newer printers having Paper Pick up problem in Tray 2 because the Paper Size Selector slipped out creating over an inch gap at the front. Give that a shot first.

Re: HP 2420 Paper Jam 13.01.00

Thanks D. Unfortunately the tray is in the correct position (though I have run into that problem in the past). I just printed again and the paper lifts slightly out of the tray and looks like it hangs right before the top roller. I had the same exact problem with my older HP 2200 as well. Any other ideas? Maybe I need to replace the roller but I just want to make sure that's the problem before I do.

From your post i would replace the pick up roller. something i have seen a few times in the last month is the end of the roller that engages onto the drive shaft cracks so the roller will not turn properly

Re: HP 2420 Paper Jam 13.01.00

Thanks Mark. I think I will do that. I did clean off the roller and that whole chamber with a cloth and some alcohol and now it prints from tray 2 -- but with a slight hitch, it makes a rattling sound. Any ideas?

Is the roller seated correctly.

Mark knows what he is talking about. Just one quick thing:

Don't clean any roller with Alcohol. With warm water wetted lint-free cloth or Bounty Towel or even just your fingers to clean the roller. The Alcohol will make it worse.

Re: HP 2420 Paper Jam 13.01.00

Thanks D & Mark. It looks like the roller is seated correctly, nothing loose or crooked. It's now picking the paper up fine since I cleaned it (and I won't use Alcohol again!). It's however making a pretty loud rattling sound on the front right side of the printer. It's not where the center roller is but all the way to the right and it only makes the sound when I use tray 2.

sometimes the shaft that engages into the pick up roller can move to the right so the gears do not engage correctly you can sometimes reposition it by removing the pickup roller and using long nose pliers and gripping the shaft about 1/2 inch in from the right, slide the shaft towards the center of the printer

Re: HP 2420 Paper Jam 13.01.00

I am having the same problem. The paper is simply not being picked up by the roller. I have taken the entire printer apart numerous times looking for any problems and cannot see anything that is out of place. All gears are correct and things run smoothly and quietly.

Also, none of the parts are too old or in bad condition. The pickup roller is practically new.
