Our Color LaserJet 5550dn makes the normal start up sounds but the display panel never shows a message and the Lights for Ready/Data/Attention stay on.
We came back to the office after the weekend and it would no longer start up properly. I can think of nothing that changed between last Friday and today (Monday).

remove net work card and power up the printer if fault clears replace the network card as its defective
if fault still there then replace formatter

Any other ideas?

The formatter is the assembly that the network card plugs into. it may be best to have an engineer to look at it as the cost of a replacement formater is not cheap

I was thinking there could have been a power surge and it may have done the damage. I just realized the printer was plugged into the wall and not a surge protector and we did have some storms over the weekend.
I may have to call an engineer anyway.

the formatter runs the display, its next step i would take the problem with this sort of fault you get to a point were you have to make a decision on what to replace. its not 100% that its the part that needs to replaced its a good chance it is, but it may be the firmware compact flash or the dc controller. thats why i recommed to get an egineer to look at

HP OEM parts resellers like Laser Pros:
888-558-5277, ext 122
or printerworks.com or HP should have the formatter board available.

I would like to know how an engine test is performed. I work in a fairly small town so I don't know how good our local printer technician is. I'd rather do this myself if that is possible.

I could really use some help on how to run an engine test on a HP Color LaserJet 5550dn.
PS. I don't know much about this "points" system but I am awarding 5 points for a helpful response and 10 points for the answer.

there is a very small hole in the left side panel insert a thin blunt non metalic object tooth pick will do the job, (there is a push button behind the the panel) this will produce the engine test page

I ran the engine test and sure enough there are evenly spaced lines down the page. And from your earlier posts I assume this means I have a bad formatter.
I'm told that the formatters are on backorder and they don't know how long until one will be available. I'm going to have to order one and wait but I read somewhere about running a printer without a formatter. Since we only have 10 people in the office I believe this shouldn't be too much of a problem. Anyone know how I can set it up without the formatter for now?

I can not see how you can run the printer with out the formatter as this is the interface for the print jobs sent from network/computer it contains the firmware to run the printer and memory.

Give Laser Pros:
888-558-5277, ext 122.
a call and order the firmware DIMM. It is much cheaper than the formatter itself. About 99% chance the FIRMWARE DIMM will take care of the problem.
Mark: An Engine Test totally bypass the formatter board. You could remove the formatter board from an HP LJ and perform teh Engine Test.

I called that number and extension yesterday and got transfered to xt 163. I'll try again. I will order the DIMM today.
Do you know how to set the printer up to run without the formatter? The page I saw said the data would then be configured on each computer rather than on the printer which would slow it down, but it would still work and that is whats important right now.
