I also have this error and need advice on testing fans. The machine has been out of action so it shouldn't be hot and it's not too cold either.

Hi Rachel,

Engine Error 1290 means "End-of-Life" of the cap pumps. These are the six pumps in the capping unit. They should be replaced once a year or when the above engine error is displayed. It is recommended to install the whole 12 Month maintenance Kit P/N Q6665-60083 which includes the six pumps, six cap tops, the CR Synchr. Belt and the Steel Belt, the Wiper Cleaner Assy, two Wiper Belts and the Wiper Blade. After replacement of the maintenance parts the service counter must be reset.
Please don't try to change the parts by yourself. Better call a service technician. He will need 4 to 6 hours for maintaining your printer.
