L26500 platen question

On the platen of the L26500 there are rows of small 'pointy nodules' (for what of a better name) that are across the platen 2cm apart.

As the material goes through they scuff the underside, which although not a problem for single-sided, they mark the first side when I try double-sided print.

I should point out that the material I am currently using is not designed for double-sided (HP photopaper), but my question is, why are these nodules actually there and why do they need to be pointy and 'sharp'  (again for want of a better description!) as opposed to something smooth and less abrasive?
