HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

- Error: Check printhead path (1) , sometimes (2)

Actions already done, performed by me (I replaced previously belt, HD, and have service manual):

1. Lubricate with oil from the maintenance kit, cleaned encoder strip
2. Replaced belt as older one was already bad, clean, lubricate, cleaned encoder strip
3. Replaced tensioner assembly (problem not solved with these actions)
4. Replaced trailing cable (older became damaged after some servicing)

5. Replaced motor (machine gave system error at startup, then printhead path again)

6. Released tension on the belt as possible cause, machine started up ok, did pinthead
calibration successfully and started print normally. Scan axis test ok
-> 217 193
<- 216 192

7. Machine printed ok about 50 A1 prints without any error, smooth and silent movement from print heads, normal quality. Even a system error disappeared (Thought problem was finally solved)

8. Error came again (check printhead path (1)), Scan axis test ok, service station calibration ok, system error sometimes at 5% startup (checked trailing cable and all
connections – ok, checked printhead movement - ok). Did printhead calibration, failed once (screen became black) and did successfully at 2nd trial. Tried to print again, error came again.

9. as far as I read manuals, only thing I didn’t already done was change motherboard.

10. With all this information, I’d like to hear from a specialist, what steps should i do
(before ordering a new motherboard) to diagnose or solve the problem.
Please help me out of this as we have lots of work to print, many thanks for your concern.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

The one thing I do not see is adjusting the carriage height using the special tool available from hp. The part number is C6071-60166. Sometimes over time one side of the platen warps thus making the height to low on one side and if just out of adjustment can cause path errors even though it appears to work ok. I would order the part and adjust the height. Make sure after getting what you think is the right heigth and tightening the two holding screws that you then do it one more time to make sure the height is still good with the screws tight. I have had times when I think it is good and tighten the screws and then do one more pass and I get noise and have to adjust the carriage a little higher.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

Thanks so much for the info, I though about this too, also been told to measure power supply but don't know where to measure and what values to read.

I will go thru these 2 steps before getting a new motherboard.

Please advise on power supply reading.

Kind regards

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

Just a thought, what about the encoder sensor on the Carraige head. This reads the encoder strip and controls the movement of the carriage.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

Hi, thanks for the info. It was cleaned, but i will double check and clean again. What do you think about the voltage measurements ? If needed, could you please instruct how to ?
(point of reading and expected values)

Thanks and regards

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

I think you are chasing ghosts with voltage issues. Never had one in the over 7 years of servicing these units that had a voltage issue. Path issues are always and obstruction or something not sitting correct. Once I had a motor issue, but that is rare. It is possible the carriage assembly may have an issue. Did you lube the back rail? Let us know after you get the height tool as I have seen many in fact I saw one yesterday that movement was fine but the height tool showed the platen had warped on the left side and I had to raise the carriage quite a bit to compensate for it. Plotter worked fine after adjustment.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

Thanks for the great information regarding calibration of the printhead height.  I was having the same errors after replacing the belt on my DesignJet 5500PS recently.  I got the height adjustment tool and found that I was having scraping in a couple of spots.  I made the adjustment, tightened the screws and re-checked the height again.  I was pretty sure this was the problem, but had to wait a while to be able to test it.

The darn printer wouldn't boot after making the adjustments, I was getting a boot failure with error code: 1f50007 Hard Disk Failure.  After searching the forum for this new error, I tested the 12V leads to the hard drive and found out the power supply was bad (24V and 36V also were dead).  After replacing the power supply, the hard drive booted fine and it seems the printer is printing without a problem again.

I did have warnings about the power supply as the hard drive failure message came up a few times before, but went away when I switched the power off and back on.  I guess the power supply was getting glitchy.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

I know this thread is very old, and so are these printers. but I need help. Im getting error 2 at start of print. I have replaced the belt, lubed the rails, cleaned the encoder strip, adjusted the carriage height, belt moves smooth. PLEASE help me with something to try or check. I was getting it and I was able to get a few prints after turing in the height screw a few turns but then nothing. another time i was able to place a dot at the other side of my media so i wouldnt print immediately and that worked for a while. now nothing.. reinstalling firmware next.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

Recheck the belt installation. Check on the left side to make sure the belt is centered on the pulley and not one rung higher or lower. Also the tensioner should have the screw completely removed to provide full tension to the belt. People have a habit of loosing the screw till they feel the belt is tight enough not realizing that the screw completely out is the correct tension.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

here is a update. i checked the tensioner and seems like screw is all the way out. updated firmware and hit print. it started printing but before it was about a inch into the print it stopped at the normal point where it says to check printhead path with error 2 still.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

If in the same spot that would indicate an issue with the encoder, belt or carriage height. Also check that the tube assembly is not rubbing. Use a flashlight and check the encoder to mae sure the lines are still there and it is clean in the area where the plotter stops. Did you use the height adjustment tool or just do it by sight. Platen tends to warp over time so sight is not a good measure if the carriage height is correct for the complete width. That is why they have the tool.

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

Im using the height tool I have it as low as i possibly can without it scraping. it seems all the lines are there on the encoder strip still. any suggestions for cleaning it better?

Re: HP Designjet 5500 - Check Printhead path error

You clean the encoder with a damp cloth lightly and doing harder can remove the lines. As to the height adjustment are you moving the carriage using the belt and do you move it all the way from the left side to the right side with the cleaners out of the printer. Also recheck you belt installation. There are two types of grooves on the belt (======== and ||||||||||||||).
You have to make sure that the first set shown goes over the pulley and should have that type of lines for the complete width of the plotter as you move the carriage from left to right. The same for the second set which should be over the motor shaft. If you move the carriage from one end to the other and the lines that should be over the pulley are over the motor shaft or vice versa, then the belt was not installed correctly and can cause path issues.

Did you get it going? What was the final problem?
