HP Designjet 500 24 86:01 severe error 0X10003 task tMech file sequence.c line 638

Hi

I have struggled to solve the above error for a while on a Designjet 500.

Following has been done to fix the problem so far:

1. Clean and oiled the shaft

2. Replaced the Carriage belt

3. Replaced the Trailing Cable

4. Replaced the Service Station

5. Replaced the Encoder Strip

6. Upgraded to latest firmware

The carriage moves smoothly all the way.

Still same problem.

The power switch does not work so I have to plug in and out the power cable.

When power up the sequence goes to "Close Window", when that is done the Carriage moves app. 1 inc. to the left and then back and then the error message appears. This is independently of position. When try to power off via the power switch the indicator LED flashes with even period.

I have tried to look att similar posts and bobmcm581 09-26-2013 had exactly the same problem but I can not find any fix to this anywhere inspite of that long time has passed from the previouse conversation.

I would really appriciate any information or idea how to resolve this.

Re: HP Designjet 500 24 86:01 severe error 0X10003 task tMech file sequence.c line 638

If you replaced all these parts, then the issue is most likely the carriage assembly itself. There is a sensor in the carriage that the encoder routes thru to read the lines on the strip. If the sensor is bad which is rare then the carriage can not read the lines and will only move a bit before it errors out. Possible there is some obstruction in the sensor opening so you may want to remove the encoder and get a good can of compressed air and blow air into the left or right side opening that the encoder goes thru. Keep in mind the sensor is in the middle of the carriage assembly.

Before replacing anything else, it may be worth looking at the attached document, it may help especially as you said the power switch LED is flashing.

Good luck.

Thank´s for the input.

I will check the sensor and update firmware again.

I will let you know the result.

Thank´s a lot!!

Re: HP Designjet 500 24 86:01 severe error 0X10003 task tMech file sequence.c line 638

I have followed your suggestions by checking the sensor (H97200335.P) in the carriage (located in the right hand side, see photo) but no visible sign of any obstructions and updated the firmware to A.04.02 successfully.

Still same problem.

I will order a new sensor and see if there is any component error.

Any other input??

All input is welcome!!!

I have never opened that carriage assembly and are you sure you have the right sensor. On the right side of the carriage is a led/receptor array that reads the edge of the paper by shinning a light down and the receptor receives the light back when off paper surface so it can find the edge. The sensor I am referring to is usually in the middle of the carriage assembly attached to the back of the circut board or in the frame of the carriage assembly. When you thread the encoder strip thru one side of the carriage assembly and out the other the encoder sits in the middle of the sensor so a beam of light can shine of the lines of the encoder and count the lines as the carriage moves. Also are you sure you have the encoder strip installed with the lines on the top, otherwise the sensor in the carriage will not see nay lines but just the metal base of the encoder strip. In other words make sure you did not install the encoder upside down.

Re: HP Designjet 500 24 86:01 severe error 0X10003 task tMech file sequence.c line 638

Thank´s for the suggestions!

1. The encoder strip is installed correct with the metal base down and the plastic strips on top.

2. The sensor you describe to detect the paper edge is located to the left on a plastic arm.

3. The encoder strip passes in front of the shaft where the carriage assembly slides and the sensor is situated so that the transmitter and reciever of the sensor is on each side of the encoder strip.

I see following remaining error sources:

1. Sensor component error (I have not found any replacement for it yet?!)

2. Carriage assembly PC board error

3. Electronic module error

4. Motor failure (very unlikely since the carriage moves an inch to the left and then right again)

5. Power supply error. I measured the 32V and found 29,7V in idle state. Could that imply a "to slow=time out" reaction from start to actuation of the carriage assembly so the logic thinks it is an obstruction?

It would be great to have the source code to see what line 638 in the code means? If it is "too long delay from actuation to reaction" then maybee this can be the reason??

Thank you again for the contributions!!

The first thing I would replace is the carriage assembly.

OK good suggestion.

I will do that and report back.

Re: HP Designjet 500 24 86:01 severe error 0X10003 task tMech file sequence.c line 638

Hi

Now I have replaced the carriage assembly - SOLVED !!

No more 86:01 code and the carriage assembly works well!!

Now I just have to clear all the "normal" issues with printheads etc. but this is a major step ahead!!

Probably the sensor for the carriage movement was the problem OR a static electricity had killed a component on the board.

Thank´s a lot for your valuable assistance!!!
