Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

I already had a couple of posts regading trying to get my Designjet 500 going on Windows 7 machines and no luck. I might as well use the thing as an anchor after I fill it up with concrete.

I tried different support numbers to try and get someone to come out and was dealt with rudely. I can't even find someone to come out and tell me if its worth investing in repairs (if necesssary to make it work)

Very disappointed in HP. I know mine is 8 years old, but it is used very little and I paid a lot for it. My experience surely does not make me want to invest in anymore HP equipment..... you guys can delete this post or take it to heart and let the higher ups know the consequences of their decisions when it comes to supporting some of their more expensive equipment.

I have a new computer, has windows 8 and I wanted to know if anything changed in windows 8 that would have the drivers or whatever is necessary to allow the Designjet 500 to work correctly?

Thanks

Scott

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

[ Edited ]

There are eight versions of the drivers for the Designjet 500, and 500+ in 24" and 42" sizes and for HPGL and Postscript versions all delivered through Windows Update for Windows 7 .  If the Windows Update in Windows 7 gives an error "Windows was unable to get a list of devices..." then see the post here for information to resolve the issue.

Windows 8 has sixteen versions of the drivers available, all the above as well as mono versions of each.

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

I received an e-mail from our HP rep yesterday that listed the HP models that are not Windows 8 compatible and the DJ 500 will have an HPGL driver only, but not a post script.  Of course it also says this is subject to change.  The end of service life for the 800 was November 1st, 2012, but the 500 is December 31, 2013.

If you feel my reply has assisted you in repairing your printer please press the kudos star icon on the left and mark as problem solved. Thank you!

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

Hi Bob...thanks for the information.

I'm not real techy when it comes to printers. I know I have the simplest dj500, no hard drive and no card. My model number is C7769B

According to your screen shot, it looks like HP DesignJet 500 mono 24 would be the driver that should work for me, is this correct?

I should have the windows 8 computer set up Monday, I'll be able to try it then. Would be a real miracle if it worked!

Thanks

Scott

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

There are both color and mono versions of the plain 24" Designjet 500 driver available in Windows 8. I would suggest the color driver unless you have no need for color.

Yes, I have color.  "Mono" doesn't refer to black and white, does it?

Yes, mono is short for monochrome.

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

I'm not sure what you mean by "and the DJ 500 will have an HPGL driver only, but not a post script."

Do you mean that the DJ 500 IS Windows 8 compatible if it has an HPGL driver and IS NOT compatible if it has a post script driver?

Thanks.

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

Nah, this is confusing info given.

The Designjet 500 only support two types of drivers, depending of course if the optional HPGL2 card is installed or not.

The PCL3 driver and the HPGL2 driver. I believe both drivers are included in Windows 8.

There are no PS driver. Only a PS RIP that was provided with the PS models.

I'm so confused. You say there are no PS drivers but Bob Headrick gives this list of PS drivers for the DJ 500:

The following postscript drivers are available today in Windows 8 x64 through windows Update for the Designjet 500:

HP Designjet 500PS 24 by HP

HP Designjet 500PS 42 by HP

HP Designjet 500ps plus 24

HP Designjet 500ps plus 42

HP Designjet 500PS24+HPGL2 Card

HP Designjet 500PS42+HPGL2 Card

Also, but at the support page (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/DriverDownload.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=1845922...

to download drivers the only option for Windows 8 is 32-bit.

What really is available for the DJ500 on Windows 8 64-bit OS?

You can see for yourself what is available in Windows 8 x64:  click on Control Panel, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, The printer I want isn't listed, Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, Next, select the port (or LPT1 as a test), Next, Windows Update, wait for the list to refresh, then scroll down and look at the list of drivers available.

Alternately you can go to the Windows Catalog site (using IE, other browsers are not supported) and search for Designjet 500.

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

Thanks, Bob. I went to the Windows Catalog site and found only these 4 drivers for Windows 8 and the Designjet 500:

Hewlett-Packard - Printers - HP Designjet 500 plus 42  Windows 7,Windows 8,Windows Drivers  Drivers (Printers)  8/8/2009  7.10.0.0  2.4 MB 2481257

 Hewlett-Packard - Printers - HP Designjet 500 plus 24  Windows 7,Windows 8,Windows Drivers  Drivers (Printers)  8/8/2009  7.10.0.0  2.4 MB 2481257

 Hewlett-Packard - Printers - HP DesignJet 500 24+HPGL2 Card  Windows 7,Windows 8,Windows Drivers  Drivers (Printers)  8/8/2009  7.10.0.0  2.4 MB 2481257

 Hewlett-Packard - Printers - HP DesignJet 500 42+HPGL2 Card  Windows 7,Windows 8,Windows Drivers

No drivers were listed for the DesignJet 500ps 42 as you indicated in your previous post. Did I miss something? My XP machine died yesterday and I'm shopping for a new one but need to know if I should get one running Windows 7 or Windows 8 so that I can still install and use my DJ 500ps 42.

Re: Designjet 500 and Windows 8....will it work?

[ Edited ]

Just choose the update method explained by Bob with the update button and choose Designjet 500 42 by HP or Designjet 500PS 42 by HP. This will install the PCL3 driver and it will work.

"You can see for yourself what is available in Windows 8 x64:  click on Control Panel, Devices and Printers, Add a Printer, The printer I want isn't listed, Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings, Next, select the port (or LPT1 as a test), Next, Windows Update, wait for the list to refresh, then scroll down and look at the list of drivers available. "
