How to programmatically query the status of a printer?

My company would like to write a small utility that queries the status of printers and gets information about status of toner, paper and so on.
I am no longer a programmer, so the job will be handled by somebody else, but meanwhile I am looking for information.
I found the Printer Job Language Technical Reference Manual, and I succeeded in using it to print status pages and so on.
What I would like to find is some example about how to communicate with a network printer to send PJL commands and get strings with answers.

Can You help me?

Thank You very much

Re: How to programmatically query the status of a printer?

Hi Rodolfo,

Why re-invent the wheel - HP have a couple of free printer monitoring tools:

http://www.hp.com/go/webjetadmin

Web Jetadmin can handle several thousand printers etc.

http://www.hp.com/go/epc

Easy Printer Care can monitor up to 20 printers etc.

Hope this helps - regards,
