UPS hardware and software configuration

Hi there --

We have two RP3440 servers running HP-UX 11.11 in a ServiceGuard cluster that are provided power via a UPS through their respective 'power strips'.

I noticed that one of servers in the cluster is directly connected to the UPS, an R3000XR, via the comm port, while the other one does not have a similar connection. Is it possible to use a 'y' connector attached to the UPS or through some other means to allow both servers to be physically attached to the UPS?

Also, what software package can I download and install onto the servers to enable the UPS to be able to gracefully shutdown the servers in the event of a power loss? Thanks.

Re: UPS hardware and software configuration

For this UPS model you need to install the HP Power Manager:

Go to register and download and select the HP-UX software.

Hope this helps!

Re: UPS hardware and software configuration

Hi there --

I downloaded the Power Manager software, and it looks like the approach that I'll be taking is to have a third server act as the manager, and the two servers in the cluster have the agent software installed on them. I did have two related questions:

1. The two servers in the cluster use PA-RISC chips. Will the HPUX agent run on this platform?

2. The servers in the cluster are indirectly attached to two EVA3000 diskarrays via a SAN switch. Is it possible to have the diskarrays shutdown when the servers go through the process?

Thanks.

Re: UPS hardware and software configuration

I installed this software on a rp3440 in past - this is working.

I think you can force the EVA shutdown via a sssu script, but IMHO this is not needed.

If there are no longer requests to the eva, the array will finally empty the (write) cache and the data is safe.

Hope this helps!
