Instance numbers in 11.11

If all the external bus instance numbers are used 254 but there are gaps, is it possible to add more storage and that storage will be added to existing bus instances and will fill in the gaps? OS is 11.11. Ioinit has not been used to compress the instance numbers?

No.

If you are up to 254, then you are out of ext_bus instance numbers - even if you don't see them in an ioscan, they will probably be in the ioconfig file... I would speak to support and ask them for a copy of the ioconfig_dump utility which will probably prove this...

Which means you are staring down the barrel of a complete rebuild of the ioconfig file (pretty daunting if you aren't an experienced admin)... there are plenty of examples of how to do that on the forums, such as this thread:

One more reason to get on to 11.31 if you can...

So, we know we are out of numbers, we are at 254. There is no way to reclaim any of the unused numbers that are mixed throughout? I think that the ioinit is something that we don't want to do.

Not without doing the ioinit, no...

Remember that HP-UX11.11 is a 10 year old OS, so it's contemporaries are Windows 2000, Solaris 8, AIX 4.3 and the 2.2 Linux kernel... back then not many people ran into these sorts of problems.
