Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

When will HP Scanjet 4890 Drivers/Software be available for Windows 7 OS? The only drivers/software provided in the HP drivers support are Windows scanning drivers dated 2007 which does not support the software that supported my Scanjet 4890 in VISTA from which I upgraded to Windows 7.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

What worked for me in Win7:
Installed the latest version of the software as follows: right-clicked the "Install" file and chose to run it in Compatibility mode Windows Vista SP2.
Installation ran without problems.
(So far) I do not have run the program itself (after installation) in any compatibility mode... just the installer to fool it (otherwise it refuses to install).

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

When I said "Installed the latest version of the software", I do NOT mean the default "Basic Feature Driver" that comes with Win7 or can be downloaded from this HP site.
I DO mean the "Full Feature Software and Driver" package for Win Vista.
Hope it works for you too.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

Attempted to Download and Run the VISTA full featured software but received a message in the installation step that the installation could not continue because of an incompatable operating system. After cancelling, Windows came up with a Compatability Window for running in the recommended settings but this install failed also. One of the error messages which came up was that I did not have system admistrator privileges which is incorrect. Attempted the download and install with and without Virus protection software on. Also attempted installation from the original XP installation disks but this indicated 4 registry programs were missing.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

That's not how I did it: I did not wait until I got the error (that's indeed the error I got when running the installer without special options).
I right-click the install file (setup_full_4800.exe)
then select "Solve compatibility problems" from the drop-down
then select "Solve problems with program"
then reply to "Which problems appear?" with the first selection (The program works in older versions...)
then select Vista (Service Pack 2)
That did the trick.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

Attempted the right click and a similar sequence for running the program. It installed. However, the only program in the resulting program list was HP PhotoSmart Essentials. Could not locate any scanning options within this application or any other scanning options other than Windows Fax and Scan.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

Are you able to successfully install the ScanJet 4890 Vista drivers to work in Windows 7 ? I am ALSO looking for the FULL featured software + driver to run on my Windows 7 x64.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

No. I have not found the necessary drivers / software. Saw a thread on the 4850 that HP was to release updated drivers but have not yet seen these. Have tried everything including the recommendations in the above thread messages but have not been successful.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

After reading user VIM & your answers, it seems that you need to do 2 things:

1. In the "Solve compatibility problems", choose "Vista"

2. Run the full setup EXE with administrator privilege.

I tried method 1 but can only see "Windows XP (Service Pack 2)" but not "Vista", and also it seems that when you are running the EXE during the "Solve compatibility problems", you cannot also set to run the EXE in "administrator privilege".

I will retry it tonight to see if it works.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

I downloaded the VISTA SP2 software which was successful. However, the software downloaded was HP PhotoSmart Essentials. This was not the HP Software that I used to run the HP 4890. I tried the scan icon and got a message the scanner could not be found. Not sure what other solution options might be.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

What is the name of the software that you downloaded ? User VIM provided the URL which have the software called "setup_full_4800.exe (216MB)", is that the Full Featured Software ?

What is the URL for the HP PhotoSmart Essentials ?

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

This provides Photosmart Essentials 3.5. It is used for managing photos. However, it does not provide the full featured Scanjet 4890 Software for tayloring the scan settings for major scanning projects. This is a different software.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

I followed what user VIM said:

---start---
right-click the install file (setup_full_4800.exe)
then select "Solve compatibility problems" from the drop-down
then select "Solve problems with program"
then reply to "Which problems appear?" with the first selection (The program works in older versions...)
then select Vista (Service Pack 2)
That did the trick.
---end---

and installed the setup_full_4800.exe, it works prefectly in my Windows 7 x64. The bundled HP PhotoSmart Essential 1.12 also works without any problems. However, I usually set the "Scan Button" to scan the file into a .JPG directly (with preview), so I seldom use the HP PhotoSmart Essential.

But I DO HOPE HP can release a 64-bit FULL Feature Driver + Software for Windows 7 x64.

Thanks.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

The full feature link also installs "HP Solution Center", not only Photosmart Essential.
It's from that "Center" that my scanning works like a charm!

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

Using the advice for Vista SP3 will get things working well. I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 Bit and this works: On the HP site choose Vista 64 bit as the operating system. Down load and Save the full feature install file (setup_full_4800) to the hard drive - Do not run. Then right click on the file. Click Troubleshoot compatibility. Next window will offer 2 options - Choose trouble shoot program. Click "the program worked with earlier versions of windows", click next and here is where you'll choose Windows Vista SP 2. So far so good. No problems. ALB

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

Don't be confused - its the service pack 2 option - not 3 - I had typo in first line of above response. ALB

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

I followed all of your steps and was able to finally load the full feature software.  When I click on the icon it loaded on my desktop for Solution Center, I get the following error message:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click ok to try again or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package"Solution Center.msi" in the box below.

Help, I love the solution center and cant seem to find this file on my pc anywhere.

Re: Scanjet 4890 Windows 7 Software

Wow, I had almost given up on getting my scanner working with Windows 7.  After searching around for a new scanner, I find that my 4850 has as good a spec as anything else available. reading this string, I went back to what I had downloaded.  I had the right file, but never tried right clicking on it.  since I had already loaded it, My options were a bit different than mentioned. I had an option to "trouble shoot compatibility". I tried that. after it went back through reloading, I opened up the solution center, and the scanjet was there !!.  Thanks everyone.  HP help got me the file, but never mentioned about right clicking and fixing the compatability.  They could have saved me hours of scanning pictures 1 at a time.
