swinstall failing locally

For any packages I am trying to install on my HPUX 11.11 system are failing with the following message:

The controller has lost communication with the agent on the target hostname:/", probably because of a networking problem or the target
agent timing out due to extended inactivity. The task cannot be completed and the target has been automatically excluded. You cannot obtain "Product Summary" or "Logfile" information on this target.

Not sure what it is waiting on network wise as the product is locally on the system. It's a c8000 desktop machine.

Re: swinstall failing locally

Have you tried restarting swagentd?

swagentd -r

Re: swinstall failing locally

Hi,

Check the hostname whether correct or not.
#vi /etc/rc.config.d/netconf

Re: swinstall failing locally

Re: swinstall failing locally

Hi,
Please check swagentd deamon status? Is it running in your system? If it is already running, as earlier post try restarting it once.

Muru

Tried these all - no luck. Still seeing the same message.

Re: swinstall failing locally

Maybe a problem of name resolution?

Try with "hostname" and "nslookup" if this really works.

Hope this helps!

Re: swinstall failing locally

I saw a thread about eliminating a codeword file and this would be the fix but alas I have no codewords being used and thus no file. Any other ideas?

Re: swinstall failing locally

Dear Peter,

First:
Can you tell us what exactly are the software install commands are you using?

As stated previously can you confirm that you can ping, telnet and remote login, from the node you are on back unto the node you are on.

Is not something daft as dtlogin not running or the file is corrupt. It might be worth stopping and restarting and getting a copy which is not corrupt.

Re: swinstall failing locally

swinstall -s /

I have tried several packages on different machines. They are all running HPUX 11.11.

Mainly I am trying to install sudo-1.7.4p4-hppa-11.11 but the pre-req depots fail as well, like zlib-1.2.5.

Have also restarted swagentd with no luck.

...also - I can ping from itself but telnet and r-login are disabled on this machine.

Re: swinstall failing locally

Hi,

you can swlist the depot?
Also try the swinstall GUI - just 'swinstall' - then choose the source - are the packages listed?

Re: swinstall failing locally

swlist shows me what is installed. It does not show me the sudo package which I am trying to install. Straight up swinstall with no args lets me see the software it recognizes, and allows me to select it. It also gets past the analysis part. Then When I ask for it to finish it comes back with the message above. I have four c8000 workstations which all run 11.11. They are all doing the same thing.

Re: swinstall failing locally

Hi again,

>swlist shows me what is installed
Well, there are the options -s or -d (see 'man swlist') ...
But it really seems to be a network problem.
The packages are local - so /tmp?

I would try to re-define the ws configuration (network, hostname, ip, ...) with 'set_parms initial'.

Can you test it at one ws?

The unfortunate thing about the SD product set is that nothing is really local. The network is always used and must be configured properly.

Re: swinstall failing locally

This takes me back 20 years.

It does takes a leap of faith.

But it does fix the problem.

And its a very good test.

Re: swinstall failing locally

"I can ping from itself but telnet and r-login are disabled on this machine."

"telnet and r-login are disabled"

Disabled at the software level, I hope.

But is it configured correctly at the hardware level, on lan0?

Re: swinstall failing locally

Terry - not sure you finished your post - what test? Also I am not sure what you mean by configuring telnet and r-login to work at the hardware level. Can you expand on your 2 posts?

Re: swinstall failing locally

Some points to check:

# hostname

# nslookup

Is hostname and IP correct?

# swlist

# swlist -s /full_path_to/depot.depot

Is the depot contents listed?

Hope this helps!
Regards
Torsten.

Re: swinstall failing locally

V. Nyga - I went through the set_parms initial on one of my seats - no change- but when I do swlist -d it states

ERROR: The expected depot or root does not exist at "/var/spool/sw".
ERROR: There is currently no depot software on host "str3-9" at
location "/var/spool/sw". Make sure that an absolute pathname
is specified for location (beginning with "/").

this is after I did swreg -l depot /var/spool/sw

Not sure if that is a clue or not. I do use an absolute pathname when I use swinstall.

Re: swinstall failing locally

'swlist -s /var/spool/sw' ?

'swlist -l depot' gives you the directory?

Re: swinstall failing locally

Dear peter,

lan0: Internal and External loop back test.

But lan0 is something you play with, at your peril, I would recommend you call an engineer.

If you do not know, what you are doing.

ERROR: The expected depot or root does not exist at "/var/spool/sw".

This means you aren't pointing at the right place. Try:
swlist -s /full_path_to/depot.depot

Re: swinstall failing locally

This is still failing - I am trying to install a depot file - I have it registered with SD afaik.

I use swinstall -s /dir/to/depot

it sees it listed in the registered depots.

It even come up and does the preview in swinstall window - analysis passes - just on the actual install step this happens.   Still a hassle.  Can't wait to get rid of these HP machines.
