Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

Shalom,

I searched by 11.31 and Patch ID here and found:

http://www11.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/search.do

Reboot is NOT required.

There are patch notes.
http://www11.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?patchid=PHCO_40381&sel={hpux:11.31,}&BC=main|search|

Thing is they recommend using the -x autoreboot=true parameter in the install guide.

So as a precaution, I'd be ready for a boot.

Take a look at those patch notes.

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

read the instructions that come with the patch

http://www13.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/patchDetail.do?patchid=PHCO_40381&sel={hpux:11.31,}&BC=main|search|

Check the Automatic Reboot Required link
Sio it will NOT require a reboot.
As a matter of interest, most COmmand patches (PHCO_) do NOT require a reboot

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

If you start to install a patch that requires a reboot and you do NOT specify the autoreboot=yes parameter, swinstall will immediately stop indicating that the patch requires a reboot. swinstall will never reboot the system without this parameter. This is a permission option so for a patch that does not require a reboot, swinstall will not reboot the server, even if autoreboot=yes.

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

Thanks everyone,
Well if the patch do not need a reboot, why the "-x autoreboot=true" need to mention per step 5:

5. Run swinstall to install the patch:

# swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x patch_match_target=true \
-s /tmp/PHCO_40381.depot

per SEP , it is ture the very first page with the icons it is clear that "reboot icon" is not there for this path.

- As melvyn said , most command patches do not required reboot. The document seems not very clear. No where mentioned about reboot in the document other than in the command .

This is bit confusing, why to use "-x autoreboot=true " flag.

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

These are "one size fits all" installation instructions for every patch.

This is a man page patch for 11.23 which doesn't need a reboot:
swlist -a readme PHCO_38573

At the top for the patch specific info you see:
Automatic Reboot?: No

And at the bottom, you see what you said:
swinstall -x autoreboot=true

>it is true the very first page with the icons it is clear that "reboot icon" is not there for this patch.

That's all you need then.

>No where mentioned about reboot in the document other than in the command.

Then it won't need to reboot.

>why to use "-x autoreboot=true" flag?

When you need to reboot the kernel.

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

Dennis Thanks,

Automatic Reboot?: No
in the #swlist -a readme command, This also makes sense.

>why to use "-x autoreboot=true" flag?
When you need to reboot the kernel.

But I dont want to reboot the kernel.
What is actually rebooting the kernel. Is it to rebuild the kernel. If yes, why to rebuild the kernel when this is not a kernel patch. . This is just a command patch .

What if I do not use the flag: -x autoreboot=true

I checked with the below command (preview mode) and found
"* Analysis succeeded. " in swinstall.log .
so that means it is ok. correct me if I am wrong.

swinstall -p -x patch_match_target=true -s /tmp/PHCO_40381.depot

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

>But I don't want to reboot the kernel.

Then don't use that option.

>Is it to rebuild the kernel. If yes, why to rebuild the kernel when this is not a kernel patch.

Again, that README will work for ALL types of patches.

>What if I do not use the flag: -x autoreboot=true

Nothing, since this patch doesn't need to reboot.

>so that means it is ok.

Yes, for as much as it could check.

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

Shalom again,

It should be noted that the instructions are contradictory.

If the patch does not require a reboot, why do the instructions indicate the -x autoreboot=true option?

I would try it out without the option and see what it does.

If it forces you to use that option, believe it. It is going to try and reboot the system, right or wrong if it requires that command line option.

I think someone at HP made a little mistake.

Re: Patch PHCO_40381 - if reboot required.

As I mentioned above, the autoreboot flag is simply a permission to swinstall to reboot if necessary. Otherwise, it has no effect. You can probably assume that the README is based on a template and someone overlooked the setting versus the patch. The patch itself defines whether a reboot is necessary.

Thanks again,

It should be noted that the instructions are contradictory. Yes it is seems to be .

-- assume that the README is based on a template and someone overlooked the setting versus the patch , -- that makes more sense , and seems to be copy paste work from a template.

I guess I wasn't clear about that when I mentioned the "swlist -x README" and "one size fits all".
