How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi All,

I am new to HP-UX.

I would like to install new patch in HP-UX 11.31.

I have some questions regarding:

1)How to see existing patch installed?

2)Where we can download the latest patch from?

3)How to install?

4)How to revert if any thing goes wrong?

5)Do we need to restart the server after updating patch?

Please use plain text.

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi:

> 1)How to see existing patch installed?

# swlist

> 2)Where we can download the latest patch from?

There is no one "latest patch" but you can find individual patches and/or standard bundles here:

http://www.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/mainPage.do

You can/should also learn about and how to use the Software Assistant Tool (SWA):

www.hp.com/go/swa

3)How to install?

You use :

# swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x patch_match_target=true -s /patches/swdepot \*

4)How to revert if any thing goes wrong?

By default, a rollback image of the predecessor software is kept. TO remove a patch, you use 'swremove' to remove and restore the previous incarnation.

5)Do we need to restart the server after updating patch?

If kernel (PHKL_) or networking patches are applied (PHNE_) then a reboot will be required. This will be automatic if you use the 'swinstall' commandline example above.

You should read:

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01919407/c01919407.pdf

http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/docs/support/SupportManual/c01976045/c01976045.pdf

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi Senthil,

Previous thread answered all your questions. To add on, I would recommend you to install HPUX Quality Packs in your system.

The HP-UX Quality Packs include recommended defect-fix patches for networking, core, kernel, and library components. HP-UX 11i v1, HP-UX 11i v2, and HP-UX 11i v3 Quality Packs also contain defect-fix patches for all applications in the HP-UX Operating Environments (OE bundles). HP thoroughly tests each Quality Pack (QPK) bundle to the same test level as a new HP-UX operating system release.

Thus it a a kind of consolidated patch. Ensure your system is installed with latest QPK patch bundle as and when HP releases it.

For HPUX11.31 system, you need to download the QPK available in this link.

http://www11.itrc.hp.com/service/patch/releasePage.do?BC=main|releaseIndexPage|&releaseId=1003-11.31

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi all,
i would like find out some details about patches.
I installed some depots and patches, coz my DB Oracle required them. So should i install other patches for keep my server health and secure? For example, i use MBSA software for my Windows servers and this soft shows me all needed patches for my server(services). How can i determine in HP-UX 11.31, does my server need some depots\patches? or if the server works without problems and should disturb him :)?

If you want to have all latest features you need to use the latest install DVD and run update-ux. Make a backup before you start.

Hope this helps!

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi All,

I have intalled following patch.

HWEnable11i_B.11.31.1009.353a.depot

Example:

i)Older (Already installed) Patch:

# swlist | grep -i hwe
HWEnable11i B.11.31.0903.334d Hardware Enablement Patches for HP-UX 11i v3, March 2009

ii)I downloaded and copied the latest depot file of the above patch bundle to HP-UX server

iii)I used the below mentioned command to install the patch:

#swinstall -x autoreboot=true -x patch_match_target=true /root/latest_patch/HWEnable11i_B.11.31.1009.353a.depot HWEnable11i

iv)Verfied Newly installed Patch:

#swlist | grep -i hwe
HWEnable11i B.11.31.1009.353a Hardware Enablement Patches for HP-UX 11i v3, September 2010

My Problem:

I am not able to remove the new patch and revert to old

I issued below command for that

#swremove -x autoreboot=true HWEnable11i

Server has been rebooted after executing the above command.

Then I have verified whether the new patch has been removed, but it is not removed.

# swlist | grep -i hwe
HWEnable11i B.11.31.1009.353a Hardware Enablement Patches for HP-UX 11i v3, September 2010

My Questions:

1)Why the new patch is not being removed and reverted to older patch? how to resolve this issue?

2)How can we know that new patch is working properly?

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Shalom,

I preface this by saying you know the answers to this. You have asked similar questions before.

1)
swlist -l product
swlist | grep ^PH

2) http://itrc.hp.com Click patch database then choose HP-UX and current version. There will be a link for major patch bundles.

3) swlinstall -x autoreboot=true -s \*

# This will obviously reboot your system.

4) Before doing anything you do:
make_tape_recovery # if you have a bootable HP certified tape drive or
make_net_recovery to save your image to a configured Ignite server.

5) Yes

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi:

Why would you install the HWEnable11i bundle and then remove it?

First, 'HWEnable11i' is a *bundle* of patches, *not* a patch.

To see what actually happened, you should look at the 'swremove' session logs. Where the patches the were applied with the bundle actually removed? [ Look at the ITRC Patch Database for the contents of 'HWEnable11i' ].

It may be that the patches contained in the bundle were actually removed, just not the bundle wrapper.

To remove the wrapper you may have to use "swmodify -u".

Hi (again):

> Dennis: To remove the wrapper you may have to use "swmodify -u".

You can also do:

# swremove BUNDLENAME.

NOTE the dot ('.') immediately after the bundle name!

This will remove the wrapper name leaving the contents (patches) installed and undisturbed. The patch(es) will simply show in a 'swlist' as if you had installed them individually.

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi All,

I have one test environment for HP-UX 11.31

I would like to test practice the patches. Therefore I have installed the new patch and removed to check if the server is reverted to older version of patch.

But after my server was not reverted to older version of patch after removing the newly installed patch.

My Questions:

1)What is the procedure to revert the server to older patch level?

Without showing the before and after *patch* contents, how can you say that? We are talking about a *bundle* not an individual patch in this case. By doing a 'swremove' on the *bundle*, all of the patches therein will be rolled back. The bundle wrapper may be left as is. Do not assume its description reflects anything in this case.

> I don't want to remove the wrapper of the patch bundle. But whole patch bundle.

See above.

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi Senthil,

Do not remove patchbundles, especially not the big patchbundles, like the quality pack patchbundles or hardware enablement patchbundles. Only individual patches are sometimes worth removing with swremove.

If there is a needã for removing a patchbundle, restore the system from ignite backup, anything else is bad system admin practice.

Chris

Shalom,

You ask:

My Questions:

Answer:
Restore the Ignite make_net_recovery image you took before the patch set.

That is actually the easiest way to go.

Re: How to install the latest patch in HP-UX 11.31

Hi James,

I have removed the patch bundle as mentioned above.

1)Removed the patch bundle using below given command.

# swremove HWEnable11i.

======= 07/20/10 11:44:21 CDT BEGIN swremove SESSION
(non-interactive) (jobid=emdlaghpvm04-0011)

* Session started for user "root@emdlaghpvm04".

* Beginning Selection
* Target connection succeeded for "emdlaghpvm04:/".
* Software selections:
HWEnable11i,r=B.11.31.1009.353a,a=HP-UX_B.11.31_IA/PA,v=HP
* Selection succeeded.

* Beginning Analysis
* Session selections have been saved in the file
"/.sw/sessions/swremove.last".
* The analysis phase succeeded for "emdlaghpvm04:/".
* Analysis succeeded.

* Beginning Execution
* The execution phase succeeded for "emdlaghpvm04:/".
* Execution succeeded.

NOTE: More information may be found in the agent logfile using the
command "swjob -a log emdlaghpvm04-0011 @ emdlaghpvm04:/".

======= 07/20/10 11:44:37 CDT END swremove SESSION (non-interactive)
(jobid=emdlaghpvm04-0011)

2)After removing, I would like to confirm whether the patch is reverted to older version. (Still I did not restarted the server)

# swlist | grep -i hwe

or

# swlist -l bundle | grep -i hwe

Note: Not showing any output

My Questions:

1)How to confirm whether the patch bunldes are reverted to older?

2)What will happen if reboot the server.

You have just removed the bundle tag and nothing else.

>I would like to confirm whether the patch is reverted to older version.

Nothing really changed.

>1)How to confirm whether the patch bundles are reverted to older?
>2)What will happen if reboot the server?

If you have already removed the bundle without that ".", then you have already removed those patches.

If it didn't ask you to reboot, don't do it now.

Use the following and compare:
swlist -l product "PH??_?????"

>2) Will the server come up come after reboot since I have installed and removed patch bundle "HWEnable11i"?

If you had actually removed kernel patches, the system would have already rebooted.
If you just remove the patch bundle name, nothing really happened, except update IPD paperwork.

>I have executed below command as you said.

Now compare these with the before and after QPK bundles that you had.

>1) How we can confirm that my older patches are exists using the output given above?

These ARE the patches you have installed. If you don't know what "older patches" are, why are you even doing this exercise?

I assume you want to compare with: ?
HWEnable11i_B.11.31.1009.353a.depot
HWEnable11i B.11.31.0903.334d

>2) What is update IPD paperwork?

The IPD is the registry for Installed Product Database.
I.e. you fiddled with the database but didn't remove any patches.

1)How we can confirm that my older patches are exists using the output given above?

swlist does confirm the existence of patches.

swverify can be used to confirm the installation/configuration status.
