ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

Hi all,

Most of you will probably remember the Doc/Docx save bug with Word 2007.

It was mostly resolved in 6.2.4 onwards and was easily avoidable, but the latest Office 2007 security updates (Oct 13th/14th) appear to have broken these fixes.

Now if you 'Save As' to a format opposite to the default, it will save a broken Word file into TRIM.

e.g. Default is docx, and user selects Save As > Word 97-2003 (doc), will cause ODMA to save a dodgy file into TRIM.

Just found and confirmed this arvo and reported to R&D.

You may want to avoid installing these updates until we have found a solution.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

I can confirm this, I have been testing this extensively, worse news is un-installing theses patches leaves ODMA Broken. Un-install of Office and re-install of Office still leaves it broken.

TIP for upgrading to Office 2007 from Office 2003, remove the Docx compatibility packs first. MS Office upgrade leaves them installed, and this also breaks the ODMA. Un-installing the Compatibility packs post upgrade, in some cases breaks Office 2007 file associations open/edit functions.

What was the trick to resolving this problem in the past?

We are currently having problems with this.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

In the past, you needed to upgrade to 6.2.4 or higher to stop the issue occurring with NEW documents.

Any existing document in TRIM that has this error appear needs to be checked out, change the file extension to the opposite format, e.g. .doc > .docx  or .docx > .doc .

That's bad news that uninstalling doesn't fix it, nor re-installing office. I didn't have a chance to test that far, but I'll pass the comments on to R&D.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

Thanks for that.  I thought that may be the case.

We are only getting grief with older documents, so will continue to change the file extensions as the errors arise.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

Does anybody know the MS or KB of this patch.

I have been asked by our patch management bloke to find out  as he can only see one for excel that was released recently.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

KB976321, KB981715, KB2251419, KB2277947

These are the ones from 13th/14th for Office 2007 that have caused the problem, not sure exactly which ones yet or why.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

Hello

Can I please confirm that even though the security patches cause the .doc/.docx default extension issue to return, that the old workaround still corrects it?

The workaround I'm thinking of is when you check out the document, change the file extension back to '.doc' and check it back in.

Kind regards

Natalie

Yes, manually changing the extension will fix any broken files.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

This problem is a real time waster for users and I hope I have found this info before any install the MS updates in our office.

Can HP proactively warn their clients when these issues arise?

This is what these posts were for.

It's not official, but I posted these threads the day after the updates were released.

I hope your site hasn't installed these updates yet!

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

I have listed the Microsoft KB articles that caused this issue on the first page of the thread.

I am not sure which one specifically caused the problem, but it will be one or two of those 4.

Re: ODMA Doc/Docx Save As bug!

Hi all

After several days of mucking around we have managed to solve this issue. Turns out that if you also remove patch KB982135 the problem will go away. This one is a much older patch but also requieres removal with the other one's previously mentioned (particularly patch KB2251419).

Hope this is of help to someone,

Cheers

Michael
