Please kicker 22004, guide me through this process! Do you have to remove the battery while you are doing all of that? You're the one hope I have because sending my laptop in is not an option. Not an affordable one, anyway.

no more help needed, I managed to fix the problem.
By the way I made the stick bootable with the help of this site: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/46707-ms-dos-
And for the rest used the steps from DMIFIT readme file.

I have the same laptop (Compaq Presario CQ61). After replacing bios chip, I have this problem. Please tell me what did you do and where did you find the files.

I want to thank you for the info. Putting in the 25 zeros for the "System Config ID" was priceless. I am a self maintainer. Saved me hours one the phone I'm sure. Good job.

Thanks! I had been in the hospital since Oct 2011 and had not used my computer until Jun2012. The HP advisor came up to update - hence, i did and got the same msg. Using your post, I got my CQ61 working properly again. BTW, I called HP and they wanted me to send it in - at the incredibly low price of $300.00! How ridiculous!

Downloaded the NbDmiFit118.zip
Ran the HPSET151.exe from the zip pack off of a bootable usb stick.
Filled in the SN, PN and 25 0's when it asks for the System Config ID.
No more error messages after a motherboard swapout.

Please contact HP support for this issue, they need to use an internal tool (which can be used by HP authorized repair personal only ) and take care of this issue.
hope it helps.

I have done all the steps and have corrected all the problems but 1. How do I access the advanced menu in the hpq138 to change the OS SKU value to 2? Only the basic menu shows 0-8 the R,S,W AND ESCAPE. Where is the advanced menu?
Thanks in advance

So, I need to attempt to make the fix using the bootable USB, DMIFIT and HPBQ138.EXE. I found HPBQ138, but am having trouble finding a good copy of dmifit available for download. Can anyone find any current links? I have one downloaded, but when trying to make it a bootable USB, it tells me there are no appropriate bootable files in the directory. Boo...
Thoughts, links, ideas?

I sent my laptop to HP for repairs awhile back and have been having this problem ever since. I never really cared until recently because now it is causing my laptop to believe that my copy of Windows is not genuine. HP won't help me fix it without me paying for support, because my warranty is out. But it's HP's fault for forgetting to input that information before they sent my laptop back to me! I can't believe this! How absurd. I am never buing an HP laptop again.
