when I connect a pavilion zv5000 win xp notebook to an external monnitor via a 15pin vga cable and then boot up the laptop I can see the whole of the boot process on both the notebook's screen and the monitor up to just before the Windows XP logon screen. At that point the video is lost on the monitor but continues to be viewable on the laptop. I can still login ok and XP continues to load. Finally the XP desktop is displayed complete with icons and full functionality on the pavilion but all I can see on the external monitor is the HP's desktop background with no icons. I have tried 1024x768 resolution @ 60 hz which gives a correctly sized image on both displays. I have also tried 800x600 but still can not get a functional desktop to show on the monitor.
Can anyone assist with this problem please?

but you are expecting 'cloned' mode. Right
click on the desktop background and select
Properties and then Settings. You should
see two monitor icons. Select the second monitor.
"Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor"
will be checked. In multi-monitor mode,
you can drag windows from one monitor to the other.
Turn off the "Extend my Windows desktop..." toggle
to get back to the laptop's LCD and then use
Function F4 (on most HP laptops) to cycle between
the laptop LCD, the external monitor, or both (cloned
desktop mode). There are also graphics adapter
specific settings on the Display Properties applet.
Choose Settings/Advanced for additional (typically
hardware/driver specific) details.
